Grout use is driven by the joint size relative to the tile: small tiles and wide joints mean far more grout per area than large tiles with thin joints.
The joint depth equals the tile thickness, so thicker tiles fill more deeply and need more grout for the same joint width.
Sanded grout is the workhorse for joints 3 mm and wider; switch to unsanded for very fine joints to avoid scratching polished tile.
