  • An ISS above 15 meets the standard clinical definition of major trauma (polytrauma). Activation of a trauma team is typically indicated.
  • The three highest-scoring regions are: Head and Neck (AIS 3), Chest (AIS 3), Abdomen (AIS 2).
  • The ISS only uses the single worst injury per body region - multiple injuries within the same region are not fully captured by this score.
  • ISS correlates with mortality, intensive-care length of stay, and hospital stay duration at a population level, but individual patient outcomes depend on many additional factors.
