How age in years is calculated

Age in completed years - called "chronological age" - is measured by counting how many full birthday anniversaries have passed between the date of birth and a reference date. When you are 5 years and 11 months old, you are still considered 5 years old in the conventional sense, because your sixth birthday has not yet arrived. This birthday method is the standard used in medicine, law, and everyday life in most countries. The alternative, used in some East Asian traditions, counts the year of birth itself as year one and adds a year at each New Year, which typically makes someone one to two years older by that reckoning.

Why the exact breakdown matters

For most adults, age in whole years is sufficient. For infants and toddlers, however, pediatricians track development in weeks for the first two months and in months through the second year, because growth milestones are densely packed in early life. Pharmaceutical dosing for children is often tied to age in months rather than years. Legal contexts sometimes require exact age to the day - for example, determining whether a defendant was a minor at the time of an offense. Genealogists use age in days to cross-check census records against birth certificates, and athletes use age in days to qualify for age-group competitions.

Days lived as a milestone

Marking your 10,000th day alive (roughly age 27 years and 4 months) has become a popular personal milestone: by that point you have completed about 1,428 weeks, been through roughly 27 birthday cakes, and spent an estimated 85,000 hours awake. The 20,000-day mark arrives at roughly age 54 years and 9 months. Other notable day counts include 25,000 days (about 68 years and 6 months) and 30,000 days (about 82 years). This calculator shows your current day count in the "Age in Days" output, so you can see how close you are to your next milestone.

Age at a specific date: past and future

The "Age On" field lets you find out how old you were at any past event (graduation, a historic date, the day you started a job) or how old you will be at any future date (a wedding, retirement, or a child's graduation). Simply type in the target date and the results update instantly. The calculator handles dates far in the past and future and correctly accounts for leap years in the day count.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate exact age in years?

Count the number of complete birthday anniversaries between the birth date and the reference date. If the birthday in the reference year has already passed, the age is this year minus the birth year. If it has not yet passed, subtract one more year. This calculator does that for you and also shows the leftover months and days.

Does the calculator account for leap years?

Yes. The day count (and therefore the week, hour, minute and second counts) is calculated from the actual calendar dates, so leap-year days are automatically included. A person born on 29 February is treated as having their birthday on 1 March in non-leap years for the purpose of counting complete calendar years.

How many days old am I?

Subtract your birth date from today to get the number of days. For example, someone born on 1 January 1990 and calculating on 1 January 2025 has lived 35 years, or 12,784 days (including 9 leap days). This calculator shows the exact day count in the "Age in Days" row.

Can I calculate my age on a future date?

Yes. Change the "Age On" date to any future date and the calculator will tell you how old you will be on that day, including the exact years, months and days breakdown and how many days until that next birthday from the new reference date.

Why is my age in hours only approximate?

The hours, minutes and seconds outputs assume you were born exactly at midnight on your birth date. To get a precise count you would also need to know your birth time and time zone. For most purposes the midnight approximation is within 24 hours of the true value, which is accurate enough for curiosity, milestones and social sharing.

What is the difference between age in years and decimal age?

Age in completed years (the birthday method) gives a whole number such as 34. Decimal age divides the total number of days lived by the average number of days in a year (365.25 to account for leap years), giving a number like 34.72. Decimal age is used in some medical and research contexts because it lets you compare fractional ages precisely without rounding to the nearest birthday.
