Age in Years, Months, and Days Calculator

Enter a date of birth and a reference date (today by default) to get the exact age in years, months, and days, plus the total in days, weeks, hours, and minutes. You can also use any two dates to find the interval between them, for example, to calculate how old someone was at a historical event or how old you will be on a future date.

Age: 30 years.

  • That is 10,957 total calendar days.
  • 8 leap years have occurred during this period, adding extra days to the calendar.
  • The next birthday is 365 days away from the reference date.

Next stepToday is the birthday on the reference date. Happy birthday!

How to calculate age in years, months, and days

The most accurate way to find an exact age is to subtract the birth date from the reference date using calendar arithmetic, not just day counts. The algorithm works in three steps: subtract the years, subtract the months, and subtract the days. If the day or month difference is negative, you borrow from the next-higher unit: borrowing one month adds the number of days in the preceding month; borrowing one year adds 12 months. This is the same method most civil records and legal systems use, and it handles month-length variations and leap years automatically. For example, someone born on 31 January compared against 28 February of the same year would be 0 years, 0 months, 28 days old, because only 28 days have elapsed since the most recent 31st of a month.

Why total days, weeks, hours, and minutes are approximate

The total-days figure is exact because it counts actual calendar days from midnight to midnight. The week count divides total days by exactly 7, so it is also exact (with a fractional remainder). Hours and minutes, however, assume the person was born exactly at midnight on the birth date. Since birth time is rarely recorded to the minute in a date-of-birth field, those figures carry an inherent uncertainty of up to 24 hours for hours, and up to 1,440 minutes for minutes. If you know the exact birth time, you can refine the hour and minute figures by adding or subtracting the birth hour from the total.

Edge cases: end-of-month births and leap days

Two tricky situations arise frequently. First, people born on the 29th, 30th, or 31st of a month that ends on the 28th in the reference month: when there is no matching day in the target month, different calculators handle this differently. This tool uses the "same-day-of-month" rule, borrowing a month and adding its full day count, which matches how most civil systems record age. Second, people born on 29 February (a leap day) technically share their birthday only every four years. On non-leap years, their birthday is conventionally observed on either 28 February or 1 March depending on the jurisdiction; this tool counts 28 February as the trigger for incrementing the year, consistent with the most common legal convention.

Calculating age at a historical or future date

This tool is not limited to computing age right now. Change the "Age on date" field to any past or future date to answer questions like "How old was my grandmother on her wedding day?", "How old was Einstein when he published the theory of relativity?", or "How old will I be when I retire?" The math is identical: the interval from birth date to whichever reference date you enter. This makes it useful for genealogy research, actuarial estimates, legal record-checking, and milestone planning.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate exact age in years, months, and days?

Subtract the year, month, and day of the birth date from those of the reference date. If the days would go negative, borrow the number of days in the preceding month. If the months would go negative, borrow 12 months and subtract one year. The remainder is your exact age.

What is the difference between age in days and age in years, months, and days?

Age in days is a single integer: the count of calendar days between two dates. Age in years, months, and days breaks that span into human calendar units that match how we talk about birthdays and anniversaries. Both are exact; they just present the same information differently.

How is age calculated when the birth date is at the end of a month?

When the birth day does not exist in the reference month (for example, someone born on 31 January checking their age against 28 February), this calculator borrows one month and adds the full day count of the preceding month. So a person born on 31 January is 0 months and 28 days old on 28 February (non-leap year) and 0 months and 29 days old on 28 February of a leap year. This follows the most widely used civil convention.

How do leap years affect age calculation?

Leap years add an extra calendar day (29 February) roughly every four years, which slightly increases the total-day count for anyone whose age span crosses one. For the years-months-days breakdown, the effect is handled automatically because the algorithm works month by month, and February has 29 days in a leap year. People born on 29 February are typically considered to have their birthday on 28 February in non-leap years.

Can I use this calculator for two dates other than a birth date?

Yes. Enter any start date in the "Date of birth" field and any end date in the "Age on date" field to find the exact interval between them in years, months, and days. This is useful for calculating the length of a relationship, a project, a contract, or any other time span.

Why do the hours and minutes shown not match my real age?

The hours and minutes figures assume you were born at exactly midnight. Your real hour and minute count depends on your birth time, which is not entered here. To get a more precise figure, add or subtract the hours elapsed since midnight at the time of your birth.

How many days old am I?

The "Total days" output shows the exact number of calendar days since your birth date. For a person born exactly 30 years ago today, that is typically around 10,957 days (accounting for roughly 7 or 8 leap years in that span).
