How the age to birthday calculator works

This calculator works in two modes. In Date of Birth mode, you enter your full birth date and the tool calculates your precise age down to years, months, and days, finds the date of your next birthday, counts how many days away it is, and looks up your zodiac sign, birthstone, and generation. In Age in Years mode, you enter only your age as a whole number and the calculator determines the two possible calendar years you were born in - one if your birthday has already passed this year, and one if it has not yet occurred.

Why your birth year might be one of two years

If someone tells you they are 34 years old today, they could have been born in either of two calendar years. Say the current year is 2026: if their birthday has already occurred in 2026, they were born in 1992. If their birthday has not yet come around in 2026, they were born in 1991. This is the fundamental ambiguity that the age-to-birthday reverse calculation resolves, and it is why you need your complete date of birth to get a precise answer. The Date of Birth mode eliminates this ambiguity and returns an exact result.

How exact age is calculated

Exact age is determined by counting the number of complete years, months, and days from your birth date to the current date. The calculator first finds how many full years have elapsed (adjusting for whether your birthday has occurred yet this calendar year), then counts the remaining complete months, and finally the leftover days. Leap year birthdays on February 29 are handled gracefully: in non-leap years, the birthday is treated as March 1. The total days lived figure is the straight count of calendar days from your birth date to today.

Zodiac signs, birthstones, and generations

The zodiac sign is determined by your birth month and day using the standard Western astrological calendar. Birthstones follow the modern American Gem Society list: for example, January is Garnet, April is Diamond, and September is Sapphire. Generational labels (Baby Boomer, Millennial, Gen Z, and so on) follow the birth-year ranges most commonly cited by Pew Research Center and other demographic researchers, though exact cutoffs vary by source. These are cultural and statistical labels, not rigid classifications.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my birthday if I only know my age?

Switch to "Age in years" mode, enter your age, and the calculator will tell you the two calendar years you could have been born in. If your birthday has already occurred this year, you were born in the earlier year shown. If your birthday has not happened yet this year, you were born in the later year. To narrow it down to an exact date, you will need your birth certificate or another official record.

How many days until my next birthday?

Enter your date of birth in the calculator and the result will show the number of calendar days from today until your next birthday. If today is your birthday, the counter shows zero. The calculator adjusts automatically for leap years, so if your birthday falls on February 29 and the next occurrence is a non-leap year, it uses March 1 as the equivalent date.

What is the difference between age in years and exact age?

Age in whole years (sometimes called "completed years" or "running age") counts only the number of full 12-month periods since your birth. Exact age also includes the remaining months and days. For example, someone born on September 15, 1990 is 35 years old in completed years as of June 12, 2026, but their exact age is 35 years, 8 months, and 28 days.

How does the calculator handle February 29 leap year birthdays?

In years that are not leap years, the calculator treats a February 29 birthday as March 1 for the purpose of finding the next birthday date and counting days. This is the most common convention used by governments, employers, and legal systems worldwide, though some jurisdictions use February 28 instead.

What generation am I if I was born in a border year?

Generational boundaries are approximate and researchers disagree on exact cutoffs. If you were born in a year right at the edge of two generations, you may identify with characteristics of both. The ranges in this calculator follow the widely cited Pew Research Center definitions: Millennials are born 1981-1996, Generation Z from 1997-2012, and Generation Alpha from 2013 onward. These are statistical cohorts, not fixed social identities.
