Centimeters to Meters Converter

Type a length in centimeters and the converter gives you meters instantly. It also shows the value in millimeters, feet, and inches, runs the reverse conversion from meters back to centimeters, and explains the math step by step. Useful for fabric, construction, room dimensions, height, or any measurement you need in a different unit.

175 cm = 1.7500 m

  • 175 cm equals 1.7500 m, or equivalently 1750.0 mm.
  • In imperial units that is 68.90 inches, or 5 ft 8.9 in.
  • The conversion is always exact: divide by 100 (shift the decimal point two places left).

Next step1.75 m is also 0.00175 km. For long distances, kilometres may be more convenient.

Formula

m=cm÷100m = cm \div 100

Worked example

175 cm (average adult height) converted to meters: 175 ÷ 100 = 1.75 m. In inches: 175 ÷ 2.54 = 68.898 in, which is 5 ft 8.9 in.

How to convert centimeters to meters

The conversion is a single arithmetic step: divide the number of centimeters by 100. The factor is exactly 100 because the metric prefix "centi-" means one hundredth, so one centimetre is defined as 0.01 metres. Equivalently, you can shift the decimal point two places to the left. For example, 250 cm becomes 2.50 m, and 30 cm becomes 0.30 m. The reverse is just as easy: multiply by 100 to go from meters back to centimeters.

Centimeters, meters, and the metric system

Centimeters and meters are both units in the International System of Units (SI). The metre is the base unit of length; the centimetre is derived from it using the prefix "centi-" (10 to the power -2). Because the metric system is decimal, every conversion between adjacent prefixes is a simple power of ten. One meter contains 100 centimeters and 1,000 millimeters. This makes metric length conversions much simpler than converting between feet, inches, and yards, where the factors are irregular (12 inches per foot, 3 feet per yard).

Converting to feet and inches

To convert centimeters to inches, divide by 2.54 (the exact number of centimeters in one inch by definition since 1959). To convert to feet, divide by 30.48 (because 30.48 = 12 x 2.54). To express the result in whole feet plus remaining inches, take the whole-number part of the feet value and multiply the fractional part by 12. For instance, 180 cm is 70.866 inches, which is 5 feet (60 inches) plus 10.866 inches, displayed as 5 ft 10.9 in.

Practical uses for the cm-to-m conversion

Centimeters are standard for measuring human height, fabric, furniture, and small construction elements in most countries. Architects and engineers often need measurements in metres for calculations and plans. Interior designers switch between the two constantly when ordering carpet, tiles, or flooring. Clothing and fashion use centimeters for measurements but patterns sometimes specify lengths in metres. Scientific work almost always uses SI units, meaning metre-based quantities, so raw centimetre measurements must be converted before being entered into formulas.

Frequently asked questions

How many centimeters are in a meter?

There are exactly 100 centimeters in 1 meter. The prefix "centi-" means one hundredth, so a centimetre is one hundredth of a metre. To convert any number of centimeters to meters, simply divide by 100.

How do I convert cm to m mentally?

Move the decimal point two places to the left. So 350 cm becomes 3.50 m, 75 cm becomes 0.75 m, and 5 cm becomes 0.05 m. There is no multiplication needed - just shift the decimal.

What is 175 cm in meters?

175 cm equals 1.75 m. Divide 175 by 100 to get 1.75. In imperial units that is approximately 5 feet 8.9 inches.

What is 150 cm in meters?

150 cm equals 1.50 m, or exactly 1.5 m. In feet and inches that is approximately 4 feet 11.1 inches.

How do I convert meters back to centimeters?

Multiply by 100. For example, 2.5 m multiplied by 100 equals 250 cm. You can also shift the decimal point two places to the right.

How many millimeters is 1 centimeter?

1 centimeter equals 10 millimeters. The prefix "milli-" means one thousandth, and "centi-" means one hundredth, so the ratio is 10:1. To convert cm to mm, multiply by 10.
