Countdown Calculator
See exactly how long is left until any future date, or how long has passed since a past one. Choose a preset holiday or enter your own date and time, then get the full breakdown from years and months down to seconds, plus a working-days count and a total-units summary.
Formula
Worked example
If now is 1 Jun 2026 at 09:00 and the target is 25 Dec 2026 at 00:00, the gap is 206 days and 15 hours. The calendar decomposition gives 6 months and 24 days. In total units: about 29.5 weeks, 4,959 hours, and roughly 141 working days.
How the countdown is measured
The calculator reads the current date and time from your device, then subtracts it from the target moment you entered. The raw difference is a span of milliseconds converted to two complementary formats: a calendar decomposition (years, months, days, hours, minutes, seconds, using exact month lengths and leap-year rules) and a set of total-unit counts (total days, total weeks, total hours, total minutes). If you leave "Include a specific time" off, the countdown runs to midnight at the start of the target day.
Countup mode and past dates
Set counting mode to "auto" and the calculator handles both directions automatically. Point it at a past date and it switches into countup mode, showing how long ago the event was in the same multi-unit format. This is useful for knowing how many days have passed since a birthday, hire date, or historical event. The working-days option counts only Monday-to-Friday days in the span, ignoring Saturday and Sunday, which is helpful for deadline planning or contract periods.
Preset holidays and time zones
The quick-pick dropdown fills in the next occurrence of common holidays: New Year's Day, Valentine's Day, Easter (calculated using the Anonymous Gregorian algorithm), Halloween, US Thanksgiving (fourth Thursday of November), Christmas, and New Year's Eve. Everything is computed in your device's local time zone, so the result matches the clock you are looking at. If you need a countdown for a different time zone, check your device's time-zone setting before running the calculator.
Working days vs. calendar days
A calendar day is a full 24-hour block. A working day is any Monday through Friday that falls within the span, regardless of public holidays (those vary by country and locale, so the calculator does not attempt to exclude them). Enable the "Show working days" toggle to add a working-day count and a weekend-day count to the breakdown table. This count is exact for the span shown but does not subtract national holidays.
Common countdown reference points
| Span | Calendar days | Working days (approx) | Total hours (approx) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 week | 7 | 5 | 168 |
| 1 month (avg) | 30-31 | 21-23 | 720-744 |
| 3 months | 90-92 | 65-67 | 2,160-2,208 |
| 6 months | 181-184 | 130-133 | 4,344-4,416 |
| 1 year | 365-366 | 260-262 | 8,760-8,784 |
Approximate values; exact figures depend on the specific dates chosen.
Frequently asked questions
Does the countdown show seconds?
Yes. The calendar breakdown includes seconds as a component, and the primary result phrase includes seconds so you can see the exact time remaining down to the current second. Re-run the calculator to refresh the reading.
What is the difference between calendar days and working days?
Calendar days count every day including weekends, so 2 weeks is always 14 calendar days. Working days count only Monday through Friday, so 2 calendar weeks is 10 working days. Enable "Show working days" to see both counts side by side. Note that national holidays are not excluded because they vary by country.
How does the calendar decomposition (years, months, days) differ from total days?
The calendar decomposition (for example, 1 year, 2 months, 14 days) uses exact month lengths and leap-year rules to express the span the way a calendar reads it. Total days is simply the raw number of 24-hour blocks in the span. The two are consistent but formatted differently: 1 year and 6 months is about 548 total days, depending on which months are involved.
How are Easter and Thanksgiving calculated?
Easter uses the Anonymous Gregorian algorithm (the same method used by most calendar apps), which gives the Sunday in the ecclesiastical spring that follows the first ecclesiastical full moon on or after 21 March. US Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday of November, per the US federal holiday schedule.
Which time zone does it use?
The calculator uses your device's local time zone for both the current moment and the target date and time. The result matches the clock you are looking at. If you are planning an event in a different time zone, adjust the target time by the offset between your local time and the event's time zone before entering it.
Can I count up from a past date?
Yes. Set counting mode to "Auto" (the default) or "Countup" and enter any past date. The calculator shows how many years, months, days, hours, minutes, and seconds have elapsed since that moment, along with the total-unit breakdown and optional working-day count.
