Hour Countdown Calculator
Enter a start date and time and an end date and time to find the exact number of hours between them. The calculator also shows the full breakdown into days, hours, minutes, and seconds, plus the total count in each unit separately. Useful for project deadlines, shift planning, event countdowns, travel duration, and any situation where you need to know how many hours separate two moments.
How the hour countdown calculator works
The calculator takes a start date and time and an end date and time, converts both to a numeric timestamp measured in milliseconds since a reference point, subtracts the earlier from the later, and divides by 3,600,000 to get the number of hours. The result is exact to the second, limited only by the precision of the time inputs. The breakdown panel then splits that raw millisecond difference into whole days, remaining hours, remaining minutes, and remaining seconds, so you can see the components at a glance without doing multiple divisions yourself. The unit-equivalents table expresses the same span in every common time unit from seconds up to years.
Working hours mode
Toggle "Working hours only" to count just the hours that fall inside a standard 9 AM to 5 PM window on weekdays (Monday to Friday). The calculator walks through every calendar day in the span and adds up the portion of each that overlaps with the 9-to-5 window. Days that fall on Saturday or Sunday are skipped entirely. This is useful for estimating project timelines, SLA deadlines, or notice periods where only business hours count. Note that the calculator does not account for public holidays, which vary by country and year, so you may need to subtract those manually.
Common uses for an hour countdown
Event planning: knowing exactly how many hours until a conference, flight, or deadline keeps scheduling precise. Shift work: nurses, pilots, and transport workers often need the exact number of hours between shift start and end for compliance or pay calculations. Contract law: notice periods, cooling-off periods, and SLA windows are frequently specified in hours rather than days. Scientific and engineering contexts: reaction times, equipment run-times, and maintenance intervals are often tracked in hours. Travel: layover lengths, transit times, and arrival countdowns are naturally expressed in hours.
Why hours rather than days?
Expressing a gap in days loses resolution whenever the start and end times differ. A flight departing at 23:00 on Monday and landing at 02:00 on Wednesday is 27 hours, not "two days." Hour-level precision is especially important for anything with a legal or contractual dimension, such as a 48-hour return window or a 72-hour review period, because a difference of a few hours can determine whether a deadline has been met. The calculator preserves the full fractional-hour result so you can see whether you are, for example, 47.8 hours into a 48-hour window.
Common time spans in hours
| Span | Exact hours | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 day | 24 | Calendar day (midnight to midnight) |
| 1 week | 168 | 7 days x 24 hours |
| 1 working week | 40 | 5 days x 8 hours (Mon-Fri, 9 AM-5 PM) |
| 1 month (avg.) | 730.5 | 30.4375 days x 24 hours |
| 1 quarter (avg.) | 2,191.5 | 91.3125 days x 24 hours |
| 1 year (365 days) | 8,760 | Non-leap year |
| 1 year (366 days) | 8,784 | Leap year |
| 1 year (avg.) | 8,765.8 | 365.25 days (accounts for leap years) |

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate hours between two dates?
Convert both date-times to a common unit (seconds or milliseconds), subtract the earlier from the later, then divide by 3,600 (seconds per hour) or 3,600,000 (milliseconds per hour). For example, from 09:00 on 1 Jan to 17:00 on 3 Jan is 3 days minus 8 hours out of the first and last day, so (3 x 24) - (24 - 8) - 7 = 56 hours. This calculator does all of that arithmetic for you automatically.
How many hours are in a week?
A calendar week is exactly 7 x 24 = 168 hours. A standard working week (Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM) is 5 x 8 = 40 hours. If you count only weekday hours but include evenings, the total is 5 x 24 = 120 hours.
How many hours are in a month?
A month has either 28, 29, 30, or 31 calendar days, so the exact number of hours ranges from 672 (February in a non-leap year) to 744 (any 31-day month). The average, using 30.4375 days per month, is approximately 730.5 hours. This calculator uses calendar-accurate day counts when both dates are supplied.
Does the calculator handle daylight saving time?
The browser converts your local date-time inputs to UTC internally, so a span that crosses a daylight saving time boundary will be counted correctly, since UTC does not observe DST. For example, a period from just before clocks go forward to just after will be one hour shorter than the same wall-clock span outside that change.
What is the difference between calendar hours and working hours?
Calendar hours count every hour continuously, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Working hours count only the hours within a defined business-day window, typically 9 AM to 5 PM, Monday to Friday. A 72-hour contract clause usually means calendar hours; a "3 business days" clause means working hours on weekdays. Toggle the "Working hours only" option to switch between the two.
