What is a stocking rate and why does it matter?

How the calculation works
The calculator follows the forage-budget method recommended by USDA-NRCS and university extension services. First it estimates total available forage by multiplying pasture area by annual dry-matter yield and by the utilization rate - the fraction actually eaten versus left for regrowth and soil health. Next it calculates each animal's daily dry-matter requirement as a percentage of body weight adjusted by the animal's Animal Unit Equivalent. Dividing total available forage by the per-head demand over the grazing period gives maximum head count. Dividing total forage by 780 lb gives total AUMs, the metric lenders, government programs, and range managers use to value and compare grazing land.
Choosing the right utilization rate
Utilization rate is how much of the forage you allow cattle to consume before moving or removing them. A rate of 25-50% is recommended for continuous grazing systems where the same land is grazed all season; this leaves enough leaf area for rapid regrowth and protects root carbohydrate reserves. Rotational grazing, where a pasture rests while others are grazed, can safely sustain 50-60% utilization per paddock because rest periods allow full recovery. Exceeding 60-65% repeatedly weakens plant root systems, invites weed encroachment, and triggers a downward spiral of reduced yield and carrying capacity in future seasons.
Factors that change carrying capacity year to year
Carrying capacity is not fixed. Annual rainfall is the biggest variable: a drought year can cut forage production by 30-60% on native range. Soil fertility, legume content in the stand, irrigation, and whether the pasture has had adequate rest periods all shift the number. Weedy or brush-invaded pastures yield less grazeable forage per acre than clean stands. The conservative approach is to estimate forage in the drought-year range and hold head count there, building a forage reserve rather than overstocking in good years and destocking in emergencies.

Fifty percent is a widely-used default for continuous grazing on improved pasture, but the right target depends on the forage species, climate, and grazing system. Cool-season grasses under rotational management can tolerate 60%. Native mixed-grass prairie is often managed at 30-40% to protect plant diversity and soil health. Should I use dry matter weight or fresh weight for forage yield?
Always use dry matter (DM). Fresh forage contains 70-85% water, so fresh-weight figures would greatly overstate available nutrition. Most university extension forage yield estimates and soil-survey data are already expressed in dry-matter terms. If you measure fresh weight from a clipping study, multiply by the forage dry-matter percentage (typically 0.20-0.35 for fresh grass) to convert.
How do I estimate forage production if I have not measured it?
A starting point: native range in semi-arid regions typically produces 500-1,500 lb DM/acre; unimproved cool-season pasture 1,500-2,500; improved warm-season pasture 2,500-4,500; irrigated alfalfa or improved grass 5,000-8,000.
