Worked example

A driveway 10 m long, 4 m wide, and 0.15 m deep filled with crushed stone (density 1,600 kg/m3) with a 5% wastage allowance: net volume = 10 x 4 x 0.15 = 6 m3; gross volume = 6 x 1.05 = 6.3 m3; weight = 6.3 x 1,600 / 1,000 = 10.08 metric tons (11.11 US short tons, 8.24 yd3).

How tonnage is calculated from dimensions and density

The core calculation is straightforward: multiply length by width by depth to get the volume, multiply that volume by the material bulk density to get the mass in kilograms, then divide by 1,000 to convert to metric tons. A 5% wastage factor is added by default to account for compaction, spillage, and the uneven subgrade that every real project has. If you already know the area (for example, from a site plan), you can switch to Area x Depth mode and skip the separate length and width inputs. The result is given in metric tons, US short tons, and cubic yards so you can match whatever unit your supplier quotes.

Metric tons, short tons, and long tons - which one does your supplier use?

Tonnage means different things depending on where you are. A metric ton (tonne) is exactly 1,000 kg. A US short ton is 2,000 lb, equal to about 907 kg. A UK long ton is 2,240 lb. Most material suppliers in the United States quote in US short tons; suppliers in Canada, Europe, and Australia generally use metric tonnes. This calculator outputs both metric tons and US short tons so you can match your quote without doing the conversion manually. If your supplier uses long tons, divide the metric-ton figure by 1.016.

Choosing the right wastage allowance

The wastage allowance covers material that is lost to compaction, irregular subgrades, trimming, and handling. For loose gravel or sand used as a level fill, 5-8% is usually enough. Hot-mix asphalt compacts by roughly 10-20% from its loose state, so a 10-15% allowance is common for paving projects. Crushed stone base courses compact to about 85-90% of their loose volume, suggesting a 10-15% addition. For topsoil used in planting beds, loss to settlement and mounding means 10-20% extra is sensible. When in doubt, order a little more than you think you need: a half-ton surplus is far cheaper than a second delivery.

Why bulk density matters and when to override it

Bulk density is the mass of material per unit volume including the air spaces between particles. It depends on the particle size, shape, angularity, moisture content, and how tightly the material is packed. The preset densities in this calculator are industry averages. Wet sand is meaningfully heavier than dry sand; compacted gravel is heavier than loose gravel. If your supplier provides a delivery ticket that lists the density or specific gravity of their product, use the Custom density option to enter it directly and get a more accurate estimate. For asphalt specifically, the density of the compacted mat is what matters for weight calculations, and that is typically around 2,200-2,300 kg/m3 for standard dense-graded mixes.

How many tons of gravel do I need for a 10 x 10 ft area at 4 inches deep?

A 10 x 10 ft area at 4 inches (0.333 ft) deep has a volume of 100 x 0.333 = 33.3 ft3, which equals about 1.23 yd3. Using a typical gravel density of 1,680 kg/m3 (about 2,830 lb/yd3), that gives roughly 1.74 US short tons before any wastage allowance. Adding a 5% buffer brings the order quantity to about 1.83 short tons.

How much does a ton of gravel cover?

Coverage depends on the depth. At 2 inches deep, one US short ton of average gravel (density about 2,800 lb/yd3) covers roughly 100 square feet. At 3 inches it covers about 65 square feet, and at 4 inches about 50 square feet. Lighter materials like loose topsoil cover a larger area per ton; denser materials like crushed granite cover less.

What is the difference between a metric ton and a US short ton?

A metric ton is exactly 1,000 kg (about 2,205 lb). A US short ton is 2,000 lb (about 907 kg). One metric ton equals approximately 1.102 US short tons. Most American suppliers quote in short tons while most international and scientific contexts use metric tons. This calculator provides both so you can match your supplier quote directly.

How many cubic yards are in a ton of gravel?

For average gravel at about 1,680 kg/m3, one metric ton occupies roughly 0.595 m3, which is about 0.78 yd3. Put another way, one cubic yard of gravel weighs roughly 1.28 metric tons or 1.41 US short tons. Denser materials like crushed granite have fewer cubic yards per ton; lighter materials like loose topsoil have more.

How much wastage should I add when ordering asphalt?

Hot-mix asphalt is laid loose and then compacted, typically to about 85-90% of its loose volume. A 10-15% wastage allowance is standard for most paving jobs. On tight or irregular areas with a lot of cutting and trimming, some contractors use up to 20%. Always discuss the planned compaction ratio with your paving contractor, as the exact figure depends on the mix design and layer thickness.

Can I use this calculator for topsoil or fill dirt?

Yes. Select "Topsoil (loose)" for screened garden soil or "Topsoil (compacted)" for settled fill. Because topsoil is light (roughly 800-1,200 kg/m3 depending on organic content and moisture), the tonnage per cubic yard is lower than for aggregate, but the volume calculation works the same way. Add a 10-20% wastage allowance for topsoil to account for natural settling after placement.
