How the carbon footprint of hand drying is calculated

Every hand-drying method has a lifecycle carbon footprint that spans raw-material extraction, manufacturing, transport, the in-use phase, and end-of-life disposal. For paper towels, the biggest contributors are the pulping and bleaching process, transport from mill to dispenser, and landfill decomposition (where organic material can release methane, a greenhouse gas roughly 28 times more potent than CO2 over 100 years). For electric dryers, the use phase dominates: a conventional warm-air dryer runs at roughly 1 800 W for 30 seconds per drying event, consuming about 15 watt-hours, while a modern jet-air dryer runs at 1 600 W for only 10 seconds, consuming about 4.4 watt-hours. At the US average grid intensity of 0.386 kg CO2 per kilowatt-hour (EPA eGRID 2023), those energy differences translate directly into large differences in per-use emissions.

The formula is: Annual kg CO2e = (g CO2e per use x uses per day x 365) / 1 000. The per-use emission factor for electric dryers scales with your grid intensity, so users on cleaner grids (hydro, wind, solar heavy) will see significantly lower figures for electric methods than the table defaults.

What the research says: comparing the seven methods

The most comprehensive peer-reviewed comparison is the 2011 Life Cycle Assessment of Hand Drying Systems conducted by the MIT Materials Systems Laboratory. It evaluated seven drying systems across global warming potential, ecosystem quality, human health, energy demand, water use, and land occupation. Key findings:

  • Jet air dryers (Dyson Airblade class) had the lowest global warming potential of all methods tested: roughly 4 g CO2e per drying event, confirmed independently by the Omni Calculator methodology and cited in BuildingGreen analysis.
  • High-speed hands-under dryers (XLERATOR class, 1 500 W, 12 seconds) fell close behind at about 5 g CO2e per use. A 2025 LCA commissioned by Excel Dryer found the XLERATOR cuts carbon footprint by up to 94 percent compared to 100 percent recycled paper towels.
  • Conventional warm-air dryers performed poorly, producing roughly 23 g CO2e per use at US grid intensity - worse than any paper towel option - because they draw high wattage for a long drying time.
  • Recycled paper towels emit about 38 percent less per towel than virgin equivalents during production, giving them a lower lifecycle footprint than warm-air dryers at typical US grid intensities.
  • Drip drying has a near-zero carbon footprint but is excluded from most institutional contexts for hygiene and appearance reasons.
The ranking can shift when the electricity grid is very clean: at grid intensities below about 0.15 kg CO2/kWh (e.g. Iceland, Norway, parts of Quebec), even warm-air dryers approach the footprint of paper towels.

Limitations and what this calculator does not capture

Lifecycle data for hand drying involves significant uncertainty. Paper-towel emission factors vary with the type of pulp, bleaching process, transport distance, and whether the towels end up in landfill or composting. Electric-dryer figures depend heavily on actual user drying time (short users save more energy than the average) and the specific model wattage. Cotton roll towels vary with laundry frequency and the energy mix of the laundry facility. This calculator uses central estimates from the published literature; real-world values can be 20-40 percent higher or lower. It also does not capture non-climate impacts such as water consumption (paper towels use far more water in production), waste volume (a single paper-towel dispenser generates roughly 160 kg of waste per year according to industry data), or particulate and chemical emissions from bleaching. Are paper towels or hand dryers worse for the environment?

It depends on the dryer type. Conventional warm-air dryers (the older, slower kind) are typically the worst option, emitting around 23 g CO2e per use - more than any paper towel. Modern high-speed jet dryers (Dyson Airblade, XLERATOR) emit only 4-5 g CO2e per use, making them the lowest-impact choice available. Recycled paper towels sit in the middle at roughly 6 g CO2e per use.

How many grams of CO2 does one paper towel use emit?
