How many extra calories do you need while breastfeeding?

Breast milk production requires real energy. During exclusive breastfeeding in the first six months, your body burns roughly 500 extra kilocalories per day to produce milk, and ACOG puts the figure at 450 to 500. Some of that energy (about 170 kcal/day) comes from fat stores laid down during pregnancy, so the net dietary addition recommended by the CDC is 330 to 400 kcal/day for well-nourished women. From seven to twelve months, as your baby begins eating solid foods, the Dietary Reference Intakes put the increment at 400 kcal/day at stable weight (the 2023 revision gives 380). Beyond twelve months the DRI stops, and this calculator falls back on an estimate of about 200 kcal/day; tandem nursing two children is estimated at 700 or more. La Leche League International sets a floor of 1,800 kcal/day as the minimum intake for nursing mothers who are trying to lose weight.

How this calculator works

The calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, the formula most widely used by registered dietitians, to estimate your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR): the calories your body burns at rest. For women the equation is: BMR = (10 x weight in kg) + (6.25 x height in cm) - (5 x age in years) - 161. Your BMR is then multiplied by an activity factor ranging from 1.2 (sedentary) to 1.9 (very active) to produce your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE), which represents how many calories you need to maintain your weight without nursing. Finally, the lactation addition for your current phase is added on top. If you have chosen a weight loss goal, a safe calorie deficit (250 or 500 kcal/day) is subtracted from the total, and the result is always clamped to the 1,800 kcal/day minimum to protect your milk supply.

Can you lose weight safely while breastfeeding?

Yes, gradual weight loss is compatible with breastfeeding and does not harm milk quality for most well-nourished women. The key word is gradual. La Leche League International recommends waiting at least six to eight weeks postpartum before creating any calorie deficit, giving your body time to establish milk supply and recover from delivery. Once supply is established, a modest deficit of 250 to 500 kcal/day can support a loss of roughly 0.25 to 0.5 kg (0.5 to 1 lb) per week. Deficits larger than 500 kcal/day risk reducing milk production and can leave you fatigued, especially combined with the sleep disruption of a newborn. Watch for signs your supply is dropping (fewer wet nappies, slower infant weight gain) and increase your intake if you notice them.

Key nutrients to prioritise alongside calories

Hitting your calorie target is only part of the picture. Protein needs increase to at least 71 g/day during lactation (up from a typical 46 g/day for adult women). Calcium stays at 1,000 mg/day; if intake is low, your body draws on bone stores to keep milk calcium concentrations stable. DHA (an omega-3 fat found in oily fish) should reach at least 200-300 mg/day because it is critical for infant brain and retinal development. Choline needs rise to 550 mg/day, higher than in pregnancy. Iodine requirements increase to 290 mcg/day and are often under-met. A postnatal multivitamin that covers these nutrients is worth discussing with your healthcare provider, particularly if your diet is restricted.

Should I eat differently when nursing and exercising?

Yes. Exercise increases TDEE and should be reflected in your activity selection. Choose "moderately active" or higher if you are doing structured workouts three or more times per week. Dehydration can impair milk production, so drink an extra glass of water before, during, and after exercise. Nursing immediately before exercise (rather than after) is often more comfortable. If you are doing high-intensity training, add a small pre-workout snack to avoid hitting too large a calorie deficit on exercise days.
