How to convert a fraction to a percent
A fraction and a percent are two ways of expressing the same part-to-whole relationship. The word "percent" literally means "per hundred," so converting is just two steps: divide the numerator (top number) by the denominator (bottom number) to get a decimal, then multiply by 100. For example, 3/4 becomes 0.75, and 0.75 × 100 = 75%. The formula applies to proper fractions, improper fractions, and mixed numbers alike. For a mixed number such as 2 3/5, first convert to an improper fraction: multiply the whole number by the denominator and add the numerator (2 × 5 + 3 = 13), giving 13/5. Then 13 / 5 = 2.6 and 2.6 × 100 = 260%.
How to convert a percent back to a fraction
Reverse the process by writing the percent value over 100, then simplify. For 75%, write 75/100. Find the greatest common divisor (GCD) of 75 and 100, which is 25, then divide both: 75/25 = 3 and 100/25 = 4, giving the simplified fraction 3/4. For repeating decimals like 33.333...%, the GCD method on a rounded value gives a close approximation (33.333.../100 simplifies near 1/3). Proper, improper, and negative fractions
When the numerator is smaller than the denominator, the fraction is proper and converts to a percent below 100%, representing less than one whole. When the numerator is larger, the fraction is improper and the percent exceeds 100%, meaning it is worth more than one complete whole. A negative numerator produces a negative percent. Mixed numbers, where a whole part is combined with a proper fraction, always produce a percent above 100% if the whole number is positive. The only forbidden input is a denominator of zero, which is mathematically undefined.
Choosing a rounding precision
Many fractions produce repeating or long decimals. Dividing 1 by 3 gives 0.33333... and multiplying by 100 gives 33.333...%, which never terminates.
