Cow Gestation Calculator

Enter the date your cow was bred or artificially inseminated, choose the breed, and select whether she is a first-calf heifer or a mature cow. The calculator returns the expected calving due date, the pregnancy check window, the dry-off date for dairy cows, and the pre-calving vaccination window - all based on breed-specific gestation averages. Use reverse mode to find the required breeding date from a target calving date.

The date the cow was bred naturally or artificially inseminated.
Breed affects average gestation length. Brahman-influenced cattle carry calves several days longer than British breeds.
First-calf heifers often have a longer postpartum interval (65 days) before cycling again vs. 55 days for mature cows.

How cow gestation works

Cattle gestation averages about 283 days (roughly nine months and ten days), but the actual range across breeds runs from 279 days for Jerseys to more than 290 days for Brahman-influenced cattle. Gestation begins at fertilization - whether from natural service or artificial insemination - and ends with calving. During the first trimester (approximately days 1-94), fetal organ systems form. During the second trimester (days 95-188), skeletal and muscle growth dominate. In the final trimester (days 189 to calving), the calf grows rapidly and the cow builds colostrum. Nutrition management differs across these phases: energy requirements rise sharply in the last 60 days.

Why breed matters for gestation length

British beef breeds such as Angus and Hereford generally gestate for 282-283 days, while Continental European breeds such as Charolais and Simmental run 284-287 days. Brahman and other Bos indicus breeds average 289-293 days. Dairy breeds tend to carry their calves slightly fewer days than comparable beef breeds. The sex of the calf also adds 1-2 days on average: bull calves are carried slightly longer than heifer calves. First-calf heifers may calve 1-2 days earlier than mature cows. These variations mean the due date from this calculator is a target window, not a precise day.

Key management dates around calving

Pregnancy confirmation at 30-45 days post-breeding is the single most valuable management step: identifying open cows early saves the cost of wintering them through a dry period. For dairy cows, a dry period of at least 60 days before calving allows the udder to recover and the cow to build body condition and colostrum quality. Pre-calving vaccinations given 6-8 weeks before the due date prime the cow's immune system so her colostrum delivers maximum passive immunity to the calf. After calving, a mature cow's uterus typically involutes and she begins cycling again within 45-60 days; heifers need up to 65 days. Knowing the earliest rebred date helps you plan timed AI programs.

Signs of approaching labor

Within 2-4 weeks of calving, the tailhead ligaments relax and the cow's pin bones become prominent. The udder begins to "bag up" 1-3 weeks before calving in mature cows (2-4 weeks in heifers). In the 24 hours before calving, the vulva softens and swells, a clear to straw-colored mucus discharge may appear, and the cow becomes restless and separates herself from the herd. She will typically lie down and rise repeatedly. Most cows deliver within 30 minutes of active straining; if active labor exceeds one hour without progress, veterinary assistance is advised.

Frequently asked questions

How many days is a cow pregnant?

The average cattle gestation period is about 283 days (roughly 9 months and 10 days), but the true range is 279 to 295 days depending on breed. British breeds such as Angus and Hereford average 282-283 days, Continental breeds such as Charolais run 286-287 days, and Brahman-influenced cattle average 289-293 days. The sex of the calf also plays a small role: bull calves are carried 1-2 days longer than heifer calves on average.

What is the difference between this calculator and a simple 283-day formula?

A flat 283-day formula works reasonably well for Angus and Hereford cattle but can be off by 7-10 days for Brahman or Jersey cows. This calculator applies breed-specific averages, adds a reverse-solve mode so you can work backward from a target calving date, and generates the pregnancy check window, dry-off date, vaccination window, and earliest rebred date - all dates you need for a practical management calendar.

When should I pregnancy-check my cow after breeding?

A transrectal ultrasound can confirm pregnancy as early as 25-28 days post-breeding, but the practical window for most practitioners is 30-45 days. Waiting until 45 days reduces the chance of false negatives from embryonic loss that would self-correct. Rectal palpation is typically accurate from 35-45 days. Identifying open cows at this stage lets you rebreed or cull them before the season ends.

How long is a first-calf heifer pregnant compared to a mature cow?

Gestation length is essentially the same for heifers and mature cows of the same breed - the breed average applies equally. What differs is the postpartum interval: heifers take longer to resume cycling after calving (typically 60-70 days) compared with 45-60 days for mature cows. This is why managing heifers in a separate calving group that calves 2-3 weeks ahead of the main herd helps ensure they have enough recovery time to rebreed within the breeding season.

What is a dry-off date and why does it matter for dairy cows?

The dry-off date is when you stop milking a dairy cow so she can rest for approximately 60 days before her next calving. This dry period allows the udder tissue to repair, the cow to rebuild body condition and vitamin/mineral reserves, and colostrum to develop. Cows dried off for fewer than 40 days or more than 70 days tend to have lower production in the following lactation. A dry-cow antibiotic teat seal at drying off reduces the risk of mastitis during this vulnerable period.

Can I use this calculator for bison or water buffalo?

Bison have a slightly longer gestation (approximately 285-290 days) than beef cattle, so you could use the Brahman setting as a rough approximation. Water buffalo gestate for about 304-320 days, which is significantly longer than any cattle breed on this calculator - we recommend a dedicated water buffalo gestation tool for that species.
