A 70 kg person doing light office work while standing (MET 1.5) for 60 minutes: 1.5 x 70 x 1.0 = 105 kcal. The seated equivalent (MET 1.3) is 1.3 x 70 x 1.0 = 91 kcal. Extra burn from standing: 105 - 91 = 14 kcal per hour, or about 1.8 g of fat equivalent.
How the calories burned standing formula works
The calculator uses the standard MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) formula: kcal burned = MET x body weight in kg x duration in hours. One MET equals the resting metabolic rate, roughly 1 kcal per kilogram per hour. Standing quietly has a MET of about 1.3, which means it costs 30 percent more energy than sitting completely still. Light office work done while standing carries a MET of 1.5. More active standing tasks, like working a retail register, cooking, or teaching, carry METs of 2.0 to 2.5 because the body makes small postural adjustments and engages stabilising muscles throughout. MET values in this calculator come from the peer-reviewed 2011 Compendium of Physical Activities (Ainsworth et al.) and are updated where the 2024 Adult Compendium provides revised figures.
Standing vs sitting: how much difference does it actually make?

The greatest benefit from a standing desk comes from breaking the sitting-standing cycle regularly rather than standing for the entire day. Current evidence supports a roughly 1:1 to 2:1 ratio of sitting to standing, swapping positions every 30-45 minutes. Standing still for very long periods causes its own problems including lower back fatigue and venous pooling in the legs. Anti-fatigue mats, adjustable desk heights set so the screen is at eye level and elbows at 90 degrees, and wearing supportive footwear all reduce discomfort.
