Why 365.2425 and not just 365?
The Gregorian calendar adds a leap day every 4 years, skips it every 100 years, and then adds it back every 400 years. Over a 400-year cycle that gives 97 extra days, so the average year length is 365 + 97/400 = 365.2425 days. Using 365 exactly introduces a small error that compounds over long timespans: after 1,000 years the two methods disagree by about 0.2425 years, which is nearly 89 days. For short spans (under a few decades) the difference is negligible, but for historical or astronomical work the more precise value matters.
