Semester GPA: 3.48 / 4.00 on the HEC 4-point scale.

  • You need 0.02 more grade points to reach the Dean's List threshold of 3.50.
  • This corresponds to approximately 86.9% on the 4-point scale under the HEC standard conversion.
  • You have entered 14 credit hours this semester with 48.66 total quality points.
  • Enable "Include previous semesters" to track your cumulative CGPA across your full academic record.

Next stepTo reach the 3.0 (High Distinction) or 3.5 (Dean's List) band, focus on replacing any D or C grades in future semesters.

How GPA is calculated in Pakistan

Pakistani universities follow the quality-points method mandated by the Higher Education Commission (HEC). For each course, you multiply the letter-grade point value by the number of credit hours to get quality points. Summing all quality points and dividing by total credit hours gives you the Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA or simply GPA). For example, a student who earns a B+ (3.33 points) in a 3-credit course produces 9.99 quality points for that course alone. Most bachelor programs use the 4-point scale; some MPhil and master's programs use a 5-point scale where an A is worth 5.00 instead of 4.00.

Cumulative CGPA and academic standing

Your Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is calculated the same way as your semester GPA, but using the combined quality points and credit hours from all completed semesters. Toggle "Include previous semesters" and enter your prior CGPA together with the total credits you have already earned. Most HEC-accredited institutions set academic probation at a CGPA below 2.0, good standing at 2.0 or above, and the Dean's List at 3.5 or above. NUST and GIKI use relative grading (curved distributions) so exact letter-grade boundaries vary by class, but the quality-point formula itself remains the same.

Converting GPA to percentage

A common question at Pakistani universities is how to express GPA as a percentage for job applications or foreign study admissions. The HEC-approved conversion divides your GPA by the maximum scale value and multiplies by 100: GPA / 4 x 100 for the standard scale. A 3.5 GPA equals 87.5%, and a 3.0 GPA equals 75%. Some universities use their own linear formula (for example, CGPA x 25 on a 4-point scale, which gives the same result). This calculator shows the percentage automatically under every GPA result.

Which universities use which grading scale?

The 4-point scale is standard at COMSATS, FAST-NUCES, UET, NUST, Bahria University, IIUI, UCP, UMT, and most public universities following HEC guidelines. The 5-point scale appears at Quaid-e-Azam University (QAU) for MPhil students and at a handful of other institutions for postgraduate programs. Some universities such as the University of the Punjab and UOL apply slightly rounded grade-point values (for example, A- = 3.70 instead of 3.67), but the difference in final GPA is typically under 0.05 points. When in doubt, check your university's academic calendar or transcript guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is the passing GPA at Pakistani universities?

Most HEC-accredited universities require a minimum CGPA of 2.0 for good academic standing. Falling below 2.0 typically triggers academic probation, and sustained failure to raise the CGPA may result in suspension or dismissal. Some programs, particularly engineering and medicine, set a higher minimum of 2.5.

How do I calculate CGPA from multiple semesters?

Multiply each semester's GPA by its credit hours to get that semester's quality points. Add up all quality points from every semester, then divide by the total credit hours completed. The "Include previous semesters" toggle in this calculator does this automatically once you enter your prior CGPA and total previous credits.

What GPA do I need for the Dean's List?

The Dean's List threshold varies by institution, but the most common cutoff in Pakistani universities is a semester or cumulative GPA of 3.50 or above on the 4-point scale, with no failing grade in that semester. Some universities require 3.70 or 3.80 and may also set a minimum credit-hour load.

How do I convert my GPA to a percentage for job applications?

Divide your GPA by the maximum scale value and multiply by 100. On the standard 4-point HEC scale: Percentage = GPA / 4 x 100. A 3.5 GPA equals 87.5%. Some employers and foreign universities have their own equivalency tables, so always check their specific conversion policy alongside this standard formula.

Does NUST use a different grading system?

NUST uses relative grading, meaning letter-grade boundaries are set after each exam based on class performance rather than fixed percentage cutoffs. However, the grade-point values and quality-points formula are the same as the HEC standard. You can still use this calculator with the letter grades shown on your NUST transcript.

What is the difference between GPA and SGPA?

GPA and SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) refer to the same thing: the weighted average for a single semester. CGPA (Cumulative GPA) covers all semesters combined. Many Pakistani transcripts print both, with SGPA for each semester and CGPA as the running total.
