Inches to Ring Size Converter

Measure your finger with a strip of paper or a flexible tape, enter the circumference or diameter in inches, and this converter finds your ring size in US, UK, European (French), Japanese, and German standards instantly. You can also flip the direction: pick a known ring size and read off the diameter and circumference in both inches and millimetres.

Closest standard ring size: US 7 (UK N / EU 51.9)

  • Your finger measures a US / Canada size 7, which is UK N, European 51.9, Japan 13, and Germany 16.5.
  • The inside diameter is 0.650 in / 16.51 mm and the inside circumference is 2.042 in / 51.87 mm.
  • Ring sizes assume normal body temperature. Cold fingers can be up to one half-size smaller, so measure mid-day when your finger is at its usual size.
  • If you fall between two sizes, most jewellers recommend sizing up for wide bands (wider than 6 mm) and sizing down for very thin bands (under 2 mm), because band width affects fit.

Next stepAlways verify the size with a physical ring sizer or jeweller before ordering an expensive piece, especially for non-resizable metals like titanium or tungsten.

How to measure your ring size in inches

The most accurate at-home method is the strip-of-paper technique. Cut a thin strip of paper or use a piece of dental floss about 6 inches long. Wrap it snugly around the base of the finger you want to size, right at the knuckle if it is larger than the base. Mark where the strip overlaps. Lay the strip flat and measure from the end to the mark with a ruler. That measurement is your inside circumference. Enter it above in inches and the converter does the rest. A flexible cloth tape measure also works: note the measurement in inches at the overlap point.

How the conversion works

Ring sizes in different countries are each anchored to the inside diameter of the ring in millimetres. The US / Canada system uses a number scale where each half-size step equals roughly 0.4 mm of diameter (about 1.3 mm of circumference). The UK / Australia system uses letters with half-step suffixes. European and French sizes equal the inside circumference in millimetres rounded to the nearest whole or half number. Japanese sizes follow a similar but not identical numbering. German sizes equal the inside diameter in millimetres rounded to one decimal place. This converter measures circumference or diameter, converts to mm, finds the nearest entry in the ISO 8653 international reference table, and returns the corresponding size in each system.

Tips for accurate sizing

Finger size can vary by half a size or more depending on temperature, time of day, and hydration. Fingers are largest in the evening and when warm, and smallest in the morning and when cold. Measure at the end of the day when your fingers are at their largest to avoid buying a ring that is too tight. If you are between two sizes, size up for comfort if the band is wide (6 mm or wider), because wide bands feel tighter than the same diameter in a thin band. For non-resizable metals such as titanium, tungsten, and cobalt chrome, getting the size right before ordering is especially important.

Ring size systems around the world

The United States and Canada use a numerical scale running from size 1 (about 11.6 mm diameter) to size 16 (about 23.8 mm diameter), with half-size increments. The United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand use an alphabetical scale from A through Z with additional half and numbered suffixes beyond Z. Continental Europe and France use a scale equal to the inside circumference in millimetres, so a 50 mm circumference is a European size 50. Japan uses a numerical scale that starts slightly differently from the US scale and does not have half-size steps for all sizes. Germany measures the inside diameter in millimetres directly. This converter handles all five systems from a single measurement.

Frequently asked questions

How do I measure my ring size at home using inches?

Wrap a thin strip of paper around the base of the target finger, mark where it overlaps, then measure the strip length from end to mark with a ruler. That is your inside circumference in inches. Enter it in the "Circumference" mode above. Alternatively, measure an existing ring across the inside with a ruler to get the inside diameter, and enter that in "Diameter" mode.

What is the average ring size for women?

The most common ring sizes for women in the United States fall between US size 5 and size 7, with size 6 being the single most common. In millimetres that corresponds to an inside diameter of roughly 14.9 mm to 16.5 mm and a circumference of about 46.8 mm to 51.9 mm.

What is the average ring size for men?

Most men wear sizes 9 to 11 in the US system, with size 10 being the most common. That corresponds to a diameter of roughly 18.1 mm to 19.8 mm and a circumference of about 57 mm to 62 mm.

Should I size up or down if I am between two ring sizes?

It depends on band width. For wide bands (6 mm or more), size up because a wider band covers more of your finger and feels tighter. For slim bands (2 mm or less), size down because the smaller contact area makes it feel looser. When in doubt, most jewellers recommend rounding up for comfort.

How do I convert inches to millimetres for ring sizing?

Multiply inches by 25.4 to get millimetres. For example, a circumference of 2.04 inches equals 2.04 x 25.4 = 51.8 mm. Divide millimetres by 25.4 to go back to inches. The converter on this page handles the conversion for you.

Why is my ring size different in Europe and the US?

The two systems are built on different foundations. The US number is an arbitrary scale tied to inside diameter, while the European size equals the inside circumference in millimetres. So a US 6 ring has a circumference of about 51.9 mm, making it a European 52. The converter maps between all systems using the ISO 8653 international reference table.

Does finger size change with temperature?

Yes. Cold temperatures cause fingers to shrink, sometimes by half a ring size or more, while heat causes them to swell. For the most representative measurement, size your finger at the end of the day when your hands have been at room temperature for a while and are at their typical size.
