How to order decimals from least to greatest

To sort decimal numbers by hand, start by comparing the whole-number (integer) part of each value. The number with the smaller integer part comes first. When two numbers have the same integer part, move to the tenths place and compare those digits. If those match too, move to the hundredths place, and so on rightward until you find a digit that differs. A useful trick is to pad all numbers with trailing zeros so they all have the same number of decimal places, then compare them as if they were whole numbers. For example, to compare 2.3 and 2.14: pad to 2.30 and 2.14, then compare 230 vs 214, so 2.14 comes first. Negative numbers follow the opposite rule: -0.5 is less than -0.1 because it sits further to the left on the number line.

What types of numbers this calculator accepts

This tool handles any mix of number formats in one go. Plain decimals such as 3.14 or -0.75 are accepted directly. Whole integers like 5 or -12 work without a decimal point. Fractions such as 3/4 or -5/8 are converted to their decimal equivalents before sorting. Mixed numbers like 2 1/4 are also supported (use a comma or semicolon to separate them from adjacent entries). Percentages ending in "%" are treated as their fractional decimal equivalent, so 25% becomes 0.25. All values are converted to decimals internally, and the sorted output shows the decimal form. Understanding the statistical summary

Beyond the sorted list, the calculator gives four summary figures. The minimum is the smallest value in your set. The maximum is the largest. The range is the gap between them (maximum minus minimum), which tells you how spread out the values are. A small range means the numbers are clustered close together; a large range means they span a wide interval. The median is the middle value when the list is sorted: if you have an odd count of numbers it is the exact middle one; if you have an even count it is the average of the two middle values. The median is useful because, unlike the mean (average), it is not pulled by extreme outliers.

Frequently asked questions

How do I sort decimals from least to greatest by hand?

Align all the numbers at their decimal point, padding shorter numbers with trailing zeros so every number has the same number of decimal places. Then compare the digits column by column from left to right (ones, tenths, hundredths, ...). The number whose first differing digit is smaller comes earlier in the sorted order. For example, 2.30 vs 2.14: the ones digits are both 2, but the tenths digits are 3 and 1, so 2.14 comes first.

Can I sort negative decimal numbers?

Yes. Negative numbers are smaller than any positive number, and among negatives the one furthest from zero is the smallest. For example, -3.5 is less than -1.2, because -3.5 is further to the left on the number line. Enter them with a minus sign, such as -3.5, and the calculator sorts them correctly.

Can I enter fractions and percentages alongside decimals?

Yes. Enter fractions in the form 3/4 and percentages as 25% (with the percent sign). The calculator converts them to decimals before sorting: 3/4 becomes 0.75 and 25% becomes 0.25. The sorted output displays all values in decimal form, and the rank table shows the original entry next to its decimal equivalent.

What is the difference between ascending and descending order?

Ascending order (least to greatest) goes from the smallest value to the largest, like counting up: 1, 2, 3. Descending order (greatest to least) goes from the largest to the smallest, like a countdown: 3, 2, 1. Use the "Sort order" selector to switch between the two. Both modes use the same underlying sort and simply reverse the direction.

What is the median and why is it different from the average?

The median is the middle value in a sorted list. If you have five numbers, it is the third one. If you have four, it is the average of the second and third. The mean (average) adds all values and divides by count. The key difference is that the median is resistant to outliers: one very large or very small number can pull the mean far from the center, but the median barely moves. That is why median household income is often a better summary than mean income.

How many numbers can I sort at once?
