How to convert lot size to square feet

Square feet is the standard unit for lot area in US real estate listings, building permits, and zoning codes, so knowing how to convert from other units matters. If you have the lot dimensions (length and width) in feet, just multiply them: a 100 ft x 150 ft lot is 15,000 sq ft. If your dimensions are in metres, multiply length x width to get square metres, then multiply by 10.7639. For yards, multiply length x width and then multiply by 9. If you already know the area in a larger unit such as acres, multiply by 43,560. For hectares, multiply by 107,639.

Lot size units explained

Square feet (ft²) is the most common US property measurement, used on listing sheets and building permits. Square yards (yd²) appear in older US deeds and some landscaping contexts. Square metres (m²) are the SI standard, used in most countries outside the US. An acre is exactly 43,560 sq ft, originating from the area one ox could plough in a day, and it is the dominant unit for farmland and larger residential parcels. A hectare (ha) is 10,000 m² or about 2.471 acres, used globally in agriculture and commercial real estate. Knowing how these units relate lets you compare international listings and verify measurements stated in deeds or surveys.

Using lot size for real estate and construction planning

Once you know the square footage, you can apply it to several practical tasks. For real estate, dividing the sale price by square footage gives you price per square foot, the standard comparative metric for valuations. For construction, local building codes specify minimum lot area per dwelling unit, maximum lot coverage (the fraction of the lot a building can occupy, often 30 to 50 percent), and required setbacks from property lines. Knowing your exact square footage before meeting with an architect or submitting a permit application saves time. For landscaping, square footage determines material quantities: lawn seed, sod, mulch, pavers, and fencing are all priced per square foot or per linear foot of perimeter.

What counts as a typical lot size?

Lot size varies enormously by location and property type. Dense urban areas can have lots under 2,000 sq ft, while typical American suburban lots average around 8,000 to 10,000 sq ft (about a fifth of an acre). A quarter-acre lot (10,890 sq ft) is often considered a benchmark for a detached single-family home. Rural acreage can run from one acre to hundreds. The median lot size for new single-family homes built in the US has shrunk from about 10,000 sq ft in the 1970s to around 8,300 sq ft today, reflecting higher land costs and smaller household sizes. Comparing your lot to these benchmarks helps set realistic expectations for building size, garden space, and future subdivision potential.

Frequently asked questions

How many square feet is one acre?

One acre equals exactly 43,560 square feet. That relationship is fixed by the US customary system: 1 acre = 4,840 square yards = 43,560 square feet. A half-acre is 21,780 sq ft and a quarter-acre is 10,890 sq ft. These figures come up constantly in residential real estate, where lots are often described as fractions of an acre.

How do I convert a lot measured in metres to square feet?

If you have two dimensions in metres, multiply them first to get square metres, then multiply by 10.7639. For example, a lot measuring 30 m x 40 m is 1,200 m², which is 1,200 x 10.7639 = 12,917 sq ft. If you already know the area in square metres, just multiply by 10.7639 to get square feet.

How many square feet is a hectare?

One hectare equals 107,639 square feet, or approximately 2.471 acres. A hectare is defined as 10,000 square metres. In countries that use the metric system, agricultural and commercial land parcels are typically quoted in hectares. To convert hectares to square feet, multiply by 107,639.

Can I use this for non-rectangular lots?

The dimension mode (length x width) assumes a rectangular lot. For irregular shapes, triangular, L-shaped, or pie-shaped lots, you need to calculate the area separately: triangles are (base x height) / 2; L-shapes can be split into rectangles and summed. Enter the total calculated area into the "known area" mode to convert it to any unit. For legally precise measurements, a licensed surveyor uses metes and bounds descriptions that account for every angle and curve.

How do I find price per square foot for a lot?

Divide the sale price by the lot area in square feet. For example, a lot sold for $150,000 at 15,000 sq ft works out to $10.00 per sq ft. This tool does the reverse: if you enter a price per sq ft alongside the lot size, it calculates the total land value. Comparing price per square foot across nearby lots is a standard step in a land appraisal.
