Worked example

A singer with lowest note G2 (MIDI 43) and highest note E4 (MIDI 64): 64 - 43 = 21 semitones, 21 / 12 = 1.75 octaves. Range centre MIDI = (43 + 64) / 2 = 53.5, closest to the Baritone centre (55), so the voice type is Baritone. G2 frequency = 440 * 2^((43-69)/12) = 98.0 Hz; E4 = 440 * 2^((64-69)/12) = 329.6 Hz.

What is vocal range?

Vocal range is the complete span of pitches a singer can produce with a clear, controlled tone - from the lowest sustainable note to the highest. It is usually measured in octaves or semitones using scientific pitch notation, where middle C is C4 and each note is identified by its letter name and octave number. A typical untrained adult has a usable range of about 1.5 to 2 octaves. Professional singers often command 2.5 to 3 octaves or more. The range is separate from tessitura, which is the narrower zone where the voice sounds best and least strained.

How to find your lowest and highest notes

To find your lowest note, start on a comfortable middle pitch (around F3 for men, F4 for women) and slide downward on a "mah" or "mmm" vowel, stopping at the last note where the tone is still clear and supported rather than gravelly or croaky. For your highest note, slide upward from the same starting point until the tone becomes strained, breaks, or switches to a thin squeak. Write down the last note where the tone was still controlled. If you have a piano or keyboard, you can match each pitch by ear; free phone apps such as a chromatic tuner can also identify the note name in real time. Avoid counting extreme "whistle register" notes or very low "vocal fry" sounds unless you use them consistently in performance.

Voice type and what it means for singers

Classical voice classification divides singers into six standard types: soprano, mezzo-soprano, and contralto for women, and tenor, baritone, and bass for men. Each type has a typical range but is also defined by timbre (the colour and weight of the tone), passaggio (where the voice shifts register), and tessitura. This calculator estimates your type from the centre of your range, which is a reliable starting point. However, two singers with identical ranges can be different voice types if their timbres differ, so a formal assessment by a voice teacher or coach remains the gold standard for professional classification. Many singers discover that their voice type shifts slightly as training develops the extremes of their range.

Frequencies and the equal-temperament scale

Modern instruments use equal temperament, where the octave is divided into 12 equal semitones and each semitone is a ratio of 2^(1/12) above the one below it. The international pitch standard sets A4 at 440 Hz. From that anchor, every other note can be calculated: middle C (C4) is MIDI 60, which works out to about 261.6 Hz; the C an octave higher (C5) is 523.3 Hz - exactly double. Knowing a note's frequency is useful for matching pitch with electronic instruments, tuning recording gear, or understanding why your voice resonates differently in various rooms.

How many octaves does an average singer have?

Most untrained adults can sustain a clear tone across about 1.5 to 2 octaves. With consistent training that figure typically grows to 2 to 2.5 octaves. Professional classical and musical-theatre singers often command 2.5 to 3 octaves of reliable, usable range. Ranges above 3 octaves are exceptional: Freddie Mercury spanned roughly 4 octaves and Mariah Carey approximately 5 (including her whistle register).

What is the difference between vocal range and tessitura?

Vocal range is the full span from your lowest to highest singable note. Tessitura is the narrower zone within that span where your voice sounds most natural, rich, and sustainable over a long performance. A baritone might technically reach tenor notes on a good day, but if those notes require constant effort they fall outside his comfortable tessitura. Repertoire is usually chosen to keep the singer in their tessitura, with occasional excursions to the extremes for dramatic effect.

Can I expand my vocal range with practice?

Yes. Consistent, well-structured practice - especially scales, arpeggios, and semi-occluded vocal tract exercises like lip trills - gradually stretches the usable range at both ends. The greatest gains usually come in the first year of regular training. Physical factors such as the size and thickness of the vocal folds set an ultimate ceiling, but most singers never reach their physiological limit because technique, resonance tuning, and breath support give out first.

Does voice type change with age?

Yes, especially through adolescence when the larynx grows rapidly and can drop the voice by an octave or more in boys. More subtle shifts continue into early adulthood as the voice "settles." Later in life, particularly post-menopause in women and after middle age in men, the voice often becomes slightly heavier and the upper range may narrow. Many singers find their voice type shifts by a half-step or even a full type (for example, from lyric soprano to mezzo-soprano) across a career.

Should I count falsetto or head voice in my range?

It depends on the purpose. If you are assessing your range for classical or choral classification, only include fully supported tones in your primary register. If you are a pop, rock, or musical-theatre singer, falsetto and mixed-voice extensions are valid because they are regularly used in performance. Make a note of where your chest voice ends and your falsetto or head voice begins (the passaggio), as that information is just as useful as the outer limits.
