Formula
Worked example
Convert 32 oz to pounds: 32 / 16 = 2.0000 lb. In mixed format that is 2 lb 0 oz. In metric: 2 x 453.592 = 907.18 g = 0.9072 kg.
How to convert ounces to pounds
The avoirdupois pound is defined as exactly 16 avoirdupois ounces. To convert any weight in ounces to pounds, divide by 16. To go the other way, multiply pounds by 16. For example, 40 oz / 16 = 2.5 lb, and 2.5 lb x 16 = 40 oz. The division-by-16 rule is the only formula you need. If you want a quick mental check, halve the ounces four times: 40 / 2 = 20, 20 / 2 = 10, 10 / 2 = 5, 5 / 2 = 2.5 lb. Each halving is equivalent to multiplying by 0.5, and four halvings multiply by 0.5^4 = 0.0625 = 1/16.
Avoirdupois vs. troy ounces
Not all ounces are equal. The everyday ounce used for food, body weight, postal packages, and general goods is the avoirdupois ounce (abbreviated oz). There is also the troy ounce (ozt), used exclusively for precious metals such as gold, silver, and platinum, and for gemstones. One troy ounce equals 31.1034768 grams, compared with 28.3495 grams for one avoirdupois ounce. That makes a troy ounce roughly 9.7% heavier. If you are buying or selling gold and your scale reads in troy ounces, use the troy-ounce option in this calculator to get the correct pound and gram equivalent.
Pounds and ounces in mixed format
Scales, recipes, and package labels often display weight as a whole number of pounds plus a remainder in ounces, for example "2 lb 6 oz". To convert this mixed format to a decimal pound value, multiply the whole pounds by 16 to get ounces, add the remaining ounces, then divide the total by 16. So 2 lb 6 oz = (2 x 16 + 6) / 16 = 38 / 16 = 2.375 lb. To go the other way, take the decimal part (0.375) and multiply by 16 to get the ounce remainder: 0.375 x 16 = 6 oz, so 2.375 lb = 2 lb 6 oz. The "Pounds + ounces to decimals" mode in this calculator does the arithmetic for you.
Converting to metric units
The 1959 International Yard and Pound Agreement fixed the avoirdupois pound at exactly 453.59237 grams. From that base value, one ounce = 453.59237 / 16 = 28.349523125 grams. To convert ounces to grams multiply by 28.3495; to convert grams back to ounces divide by 28.3495. For kilograms, first get grams then divide by 1000, or divide ounces by 35.274. These conversions matter for international shipping (many carriers invoice in kg), laboratory measurements, and metric cooking recipes.

Frequently asked questions
How many ounces are in a pound?
There are exactly 16 avoirdupois ounces in one pound. This is the definition used for food, body weight, postal packages, and everyday goods in the United States, United Kingdom, and other countries that use imperial units.
How do I convert ounces to pounds?
Divide the number of ounces by 16. For example, 24 oz / 16 = 1.5 lb. If you have a mixed pounds-and-ounces value like 1 lb 8 oz, first convert to all-ounces: (1 x 16) + 8 = 24 oz, then divide by 16 to get 1.5 lb.
What is 8 ounces in pounds?
8 oz / 16 = 0.5 lb (half a pound). In grams that is 8 x 28.3495 = 226.80 g.
What is the difference between a troy ounce and a regular ounce?
A troy ounce (ozt) equals 31.1035 grams, while a standard avoirdupois ounce equals 28.3495 grams. Troy ounces are about 9.7% heavier. Precious metals (gold, silver, platinum) and gemstones are priced and traded in troy ounces, while food, body weight, and packages use avoirdupois ounces. Always check which system a scale or price quote is using if you are dealing with valuable materials.
How do I convert pounds and ounces to decimal pounds?
Multiply the whole-pound number by 16 to convert to ounces, add the remaining ounces, then divide the total by 16. Example: 3 lb 10 oz = (3 x 16 + 10) / 16 = 58 / 16 = 3.625 lb. Use the "Pounds + ounces to decimals" mode in this calculator to do it automatically.
How many ounces are in a stone?
One stone equals 14 pounds, and since there are 16 ounces per pound, one stone equals 14 x 16 = 224 ounces. The stone is used mainly for body weight in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
How do I convert ounces to grams or kilograms?
Multiply ounces by 28.3495 to get grams, or by 0.0283495 to get kilograms directly. For example, 16 oz x 28.3495 = 453.59 g = 0.45359 kg, which is exactly one pound. This calculator shows grams and kilograms alongside every pounds result.
