What is a rate of pay calculator?

A rate of pay calculator converts your compensation between pay periods so you can compare job offers, negotiate salary, or plan a budget on a consistent basis. Employers quote pay as hourly wages, weekly salaries, biweekly paychecks, or annual figures depending on the role, industry, and location. Converting them to the same period makes side-by-side comparison straightforward. This calculator handles all standard US pay periods: hourly, daily, weekly, biweekly, semi-monthly, monthly, quarterly, and annual.

How to convert between pay periods

All conversions flow through the annual figure. First multiply your input pay by the number of periods in a year to get annual pay: an hourly worker multiplies by hours per week and then by 52; a monthly worker multiplies by 12. From annual pay, divide by 52 for weekly, divide by 26 for biweekly, divide by 24 for semi-monthly, divide by 12 for monthly, or divide by 4 for quarterly. The daily rate is the weekly figure divided by the number of working days per week. If you also work overtime, the calculator adds the extra earnings (base hourly rate multiplied by the overtime multiplier and the overtime hours) before doing all the conversions.

Accounting for paid time off and holidays

Your nominal annual salary assumes you are paid for every working day of the year. When you factor in paid holidays and vacation days, your effective daily rate stays the same (you are still paid on those days), but your total paid-hours count falls, which changes your cost per hour to an employer. The adjusted figures this calculator shows reflect the daily earnings multiplied by the number of days you actually work, so you can compare the real value of a role with generous PTO against one with a slightly higher headline salary but fewer paid days off.

Biweekly vs. semi-monthly: what is the difference?

These two pay schedules look similar but produce different paycheck amounts. Biweekly means you are paid every two weeks, for 26 paychecks per year. Semi-monthly means you are paid twice a month (typically the 1st and 15th), for exactly 24 paychecks per year. On a $60,000 annual salary, a biweekly paycheck is $2,307.69 while a semi-monthly paycheck is $2,500.00. The annual total is the same, but the per-paycheck amount differs because the year has 52 weeks, not 48. Biweekly employees receive two "extra" paychecks per year compared to semi-monthly.

How do I convert an hourly wage to an annual salary?

Multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then multiply that weekly figure by 52. For example, $25/hour at 40 hours per week gives $25 x 40 x 52 = $52,000 per year. If you also work overtime, add those earnings separately at the applicable multiplier (usually 1.5x).

How many hours are in a work year?

A standard full-time schedule of 40 hours per week for 52 weeks equals 2,080 hours per year. This figure is commonly used to convert an annual salary to an hourly rate. Divide any annual salary by 2,080 to find the equivalent hourly wage assuming no overtime.

What is the difference between gross pay and net pay?

Gross pay is your total earnings before any deductions. Net pay (or take-home pay) is what remains after federal income tax, state and local taxes, Social Security (6.2%), Medicare (1.45%), and any voluntary deductions such as retirement contributions or health-insurance premiums are subtracted. This calculator shows gross figures only.

How is overtime pay calculated?

Under the US Fair Labor Standards Act, most hourly workers are entitled to 1.5 times their regular rate for all hours worked beyond 40 in a workweek. Some employers pay double time (2x) for specific shifts or weekend work. To calculate your annual overtime contribution, multiply your base hourly rate by the overtime multiplier, then by weekly overtime hours, and then by 52.

Why does my biweekly pay not equal twice my weekly pay?

It does equal twice the weekly pay, but only if you compare carefully. The distinction people often notice is that biweekly pay periods produce 26 paychecks per year, not 24. So your biweekly paycheck is annual salary divided by 26, not divided by 24. Two of those months each year will contain three paychecks instead of two.
