Worked example

A Valorant player using 800 DPI and 0.35 in-game sensitivity: eDPI = 800 x 0.35 = 280. The pro average for Valorant is 280 eDPI, so this player matches the pro mean. Reverse solve: to achieve 280 eDPI on a 400 DPI mouse, set sensitivity = 280 / 400 = 0.70. The cm/360 at 280 eDPI in Valorant (yaw 0.07) is (360 / 0.07 / 280) x 2.54 = 46.8 cm.

What is eDPI?

eDPI stands for effective dots per inch. Your mouse hardware reports cursor movement in counts per inch, controlled by its DPI setting. Every game then applies its own in-game sensitivity multiplier to those counts before moving the camera. eDPI is the product of these two numbers: eDPI = DPI x sensitivity. A player running 800 DPI with 0.35 sensitivity and a player running 400 DPI with 0.70 sensitivity both produce exactly 280 eDPI - identical aiming speeds despite different hardware settings. eDPI is the standard metric used across the competitive gaming community because it isolates true sensitivity from the arbitrary split between hardware and software.

Why eDPI beats raw DPI for comparisons

DPI alone tells you nothing useful about how fast the camera moves in a game. Two players can both use 1600 DPI but if one sets 0.2 in-game sensitivity and the other sets 2.0, their effective speeds differ by a factor of ten. Professional players almost universally favor low hardware DPI (400 or 800) and tune the in-game sensitivity to achieve the exact feel they want, so comparing raw DPI between pro setups is nearly meaningless. eDPI collapses both numbers into one, enabling direct comparisons across any combination of hardware and software settings. It is the standard unit in pro player databases and the number coaches and analysts discuss when evaluating setups.

How to use reverse-solve modes

The reverse modes let you work backward from a target eDPI. If you want to match a pro player's 280 eDPI but your mouse is locked to 800 DPI, choose "Sensitivity" mode, enter 800 DPI and 280 as your target, and the calculator outputs the exact sensitivity to enter in-game. The "DPI" mode is useful when upgrading hardware: enter your current in-game sensitivity and target eDPI, and the result tells you which DPI step to select on the new mouse. Both modes also output cm/360 so you can verify the physical feel before committing the change.

cm/360 and why eDPI cannot be compared across games

eDPI is game-specific because each engine scales sensitivity differently. CS2 uses a yaw of 0.022 degrees per count; Valorant uses 0.07. This means 800 eDPI in CS2 is a far slower physical rotation than 800 eDPI in Valorant. The universal measure is cm/360: the real-world centimetres of mouse movement needed to complete a full 360-degree rotation. What is a good eDPI for gaming?

It depends on the game. Valorant pros cluster around 160 to 520 eDPI (average 280). CS2 pros typically use 560 to 1240 eDPI (average 800). Apex Legends players tend to use 800 to 2000 eDPI. There is no universal ideal - the right eDPI is one that lets you track targets accurately with consistent arm and wrist movement. Start near the pro average for your game and adjust slowly over several sessions rather than making large jumps.

Should I use 400 or 800 DPI?

Both are excellent choices and the most common among professional players. Lower hardware DPI produces smoother tracking because the sensor generates fewer signal updates per inch, reducing jitter at slow sensitivity settings. Most gaming mice are tuned for clean performance at 400 and 800 DPI. What matters most is your final eDPI, not which DPI stage you use to get there - a player at 400 DPI with 0.70 sensitivity is identical to one at 800 DPI with 0.35 sensitivity.

Why can I not compare eDPI directly between CS2 and Valorant?
