Your details

Men and women use slightly different sizing tables.
Waist circumference is the most accurate input. Existing belt length is the distance from where the leather meets the buckle hardware to the hole you normally use.
Measure where the belt actually sits on your body - usually at the trouser waist. Keep the tape snug but not compressed.

Your belt size is US/UK 36" (EU 90, S).

  • Your recommended US/UK belt size is 36" (EU 90, letter size S).
  • A standard 5-hole belt in this size fits a waist range of 32 to 36 in - the center hole is your ideal fit.

Next stepWhen trying on a belt, aim to use the center hole. If you land on the first or last hole, the belt is likely the wrong size.

How to measure your belt size

The most reliable way to find your belt size is to measure your waist directly, not to rely on your pants size. Put on the trousers or jeans you intend to wear with the belt, positioned at the height you normally wear them. Thread a flexible tape measure through the belt loops or hold it flat around your waist at the position where the belt will sit. Pull it snug - firm enough that there is no sag, but not compressed. Read the number at the overlap and record it to the nearest quarter inch or half centimetre. Take the measurement three times and average them if you are between two sizes. Your belt size is typically this measurement plus 2 inches, rounded to the nearest even number (so a 33-inch waist becomes a size 36 belt, because 33 + 2 = 35, rounded up to the nearest even = 36).

US, EU, and letter sizing explained

US and UK belt sizes are stated in inches and represent the approximate total usable length of the belt from the buckle pin to the center hole. Most standard belts have five holes spaced one inch apart, so a size 36 belt comfortably fits waists from 32 to 36 inches, with the center hole sitting at 34 inches. EU sizing is in centimetres and is calculated by converting the US inch size using the formula: EU size = US size x 2.54, then rounding to the nearest 5 cm increment. So US 36 becomes roughly EU 90. Letter sizes (XS, S, M, L, XL, 2XL) are the least standardized and vary noticeably between brands - always cross-reference with the numeric size when ordering online. Women's sizing follows the same logic but tends to use a slightly shifted number range, with smaller even numbers like 28 and 30 more common than in men's sizing.

Using an existing belt to find your size

If you already own a well-fitting belt, you can measure it directly to confirm your size without measuring your waist. Lay the belt flat on a table. Measure from the point where the leather meets the buckle hardware (the stitch or fold, not the tip of the buckle prong) to the hole you normally fasten. This measurement gives you your effective belt working length, which corresponds to your waist size at that hole. Add 2 inches to this number and round to the nearest even number to get your US belt size. For example, if your working length is 34 inches, your belt size is approximately 36. Note that the total physical length of the belt, from buckle tip to tail tip, will typically be several inches longer than the labeled size.

When pants size does not match belt size

Clothing manufacturers do not standardize pants waist sizing - a label that reads 32 inches can mean a true waist anywhere from 31 to 34 inches depending on the brand, the cut, and the amount of ease built into the pattern. For this reason, adding 2 inches to your pants label gives only a rough starting estimate for your belt size, not a guaranteed fit. For dress belts, where a precise fit matters visually, always measure your waist directly. For casual belts, the pants-plus-2 rule usually gets you within one size. If you land between two sizes, choose the larger one - you can always use a further-out hole, but a belt that is too small cannot be extended.

Frequently asked questions

What size belt do I need for a 34-inch waist?

For a 34-inch waist, the standard recommendation is a size 36 belt (34 + 2 = 36). A size 36 belt with five holes spaced one inch apart will have its center hole at 34 inches, giving you two holes of adjustment in either direction. If you are closer to 33 or 35 inches, a size 36 is still the right choice.

Is belt size the same as pants size?

No. Belt size is typically 2 inches larger than your pants waist size, because belts are measured from the buckle to the center hole and need extra length to wrap around the trouser band. However, pants label sizes vary between brands, so measuring your actual waist is more reliable than adding 2 to your pants label.

How do I measure an existing belt to find my size?

Lay the belt flat. Measure from the point where the leather or strap meets the buckle hardware (not the tip of the buckle) to the hole you normally use. This is your effective belt length, which approximates your waist size at that hole. Add 2 inches and round to the nearest even number to get your US belt size.

What is a size 90 in EU belt sizing?

EU 90 corresponds to approximately US/UK size 36 inches. The conversion is: EU size (cm) = US size (in) x 2.54, rounded to the nearest 5 cm. So a size 36 belt gives 36 x 2.54 = 91.4 cm, rounded to 90. This belt fits a waist of roughly 32 to 36 inches (82 to 92 cm).

Should I size up or down if I am between belt sizes?

Size up. Belt sizes come in even-number increments (32, 34, 36...) so if your waist measurement falls on an odd number, the next even size up is the standard recommendation. A slightly larger belt lets you use the tighter holes as needed, while a belt that is too small has no adjustment available.

Do men and women use different belt sizing systems?

The same inch-based formula applies to both, but women's belts are often labeled with smaller even numbers (28, 30, 32) and may also use XS through XL letter sizing more prominently. Women's sizing is less standardized across brands than men's, so always verify with the brand's own size chart when ordering.

How long is a size 36 belt in total?

The labeled size refers to the working length from buckle hardware to the center hole. The total physical length of a size 36 belt is typically around 44 inches, including the tail beyond the tip hole. This varies by brand and style - dress belts tend to be trimmer, while casual and western belts may have a longer tail.
