How jeans sizing works
Most jeans sold in the US and internationally are tagged with two numbers: W (waist) and L (leg length, also called inseam), both in inches. A tag reading W32 / L30 means the jeans have a 32-inch waist opening and a 30-inch inner leg seam. Men's jeans use this W/L format consistently worldwide. Women's jeans are less standardized - US brands often use a numeric size (0, 2, 4...) or a letter size (XS, S, M, L) instead of W/L, making international shopping confusing. This calculator converts your measurements into all of those formats at once so you can shop anywhere with confidence.
How to measure waist and inseam
For the waist, wrap a flexible tape measure around your natural waistline at the point where you normally wear jeans - typically just below the navel. Keep the tape horizontal and snug but not tight; note the full circumference. For the inseam, stand straight with your feet about shoulder-width apart and measure from the top of the inner thigh (crotch seam) down to the floor, or to the ankle if you prefer cropped jeans. If measuring yourself is awkward, use a pair of jeans that already fit well: lay them flat on a table, measure the waistband from seam to seam at the button level, then double that figure to get the circumference. Measure the inner seam from the crotch seam to the hem for the inseam.
Understanding international jeans size systems
Men's EU jeans sizing simply converts the waist measurement to centimetres. A W32 waist is 32 x 2.54 = 81.3 cm, so the EU tag reads roughly 82 cm. Italian sizing for men mirrors EU. UK men's jeans use the same W/L format as US jeans. Women's EU sizing runs on an even-number scale (32 to 58) where each size step adds roughly 2 cm to the waist. UK women's sizes use a separate scale starting at 4 (corresponding to a 23-inch waist). Italian women's sizes mirror EU. Japanese women's sizes use odd numbers (5, 7, 9...) on their own scale. Because vanity sizing - labeling clothes smaller than they actually measure - is widespread, always verify against a brand's specific size chart rather than relying on the tag number alone.
Choosing the right inseam length
Inseam length is as important as the waist size but is often underestimated when shopping online. As a guide for men: heights up to 5 ft 5 in typically need a 28- to 29-inch inseam; 5 ft 6 in to 5 ft 9 in usually fits a 30- to 31-inch inseam; 5 ft 10 in to 6 ft suits a 32-inch inseam; and 6 ft 1 in and above often needs 34 inches or more. For women: below 5 ft 3 in generally suits a 28- to 29-inch inseam; 5 ft 4 in to 5 ft 6 in suits a 30- to 31-inch inseam; 5 ft 7 in and above suits a 32- to 34-inch inseam. These are starting points only - the ideal length also depends on the rise of the jeans, your preferred break at the shoe, and whether you intend to hem or cuff them.

Frequently asked questions
What does W32 / L32 mean on jeans?
It means the waist opening measures 32 inches and the inner leg seam (inseam) measures 32 inches. The W number maps to your body waist circumference and the L number maps to the length from your crotch to where the hem should fall.
What is my EU jeans size if I wear US W32?
For men, EU jeans sizing converts the waist to centimetres: W32 is 32 x 2.54 = 81.3 cm, so the EU tag reads roughly 82 cm. For women, the EU scale is separate: a W32 body waist corresponds approximately to EU size 50.
What is the difference between a women's US size 6 and W26?
They refer to the same waist measurement expressed in two different systems. Women's US numeric size 6 corresponds to a body waist of about 26 inches, which is W26 in the W/L system. Many brands use the numeric system on their tags while others use W/L - both are measuring the same thing.
How do I measure a flat pair of jeans for this calculator?
Lay the jeans flat on a table. At the level of the waist button, measure the waistband from one side seam to the other - this is half the circumference. Select "Flat jeans measurements" mode and enter that half-width; the calculator doubles it automatically. For the inseam, measure from the crotch seam to the hem along the inner leg.
Why do jeans often feel tighter than the tag suggests?
Raw (un-washed) denim and rigid non-stretch denim can shrink 1 to 2 inches in the waist after the first wash, so many people size up by one W for raw denim. Stretch jeans (with 1 to 4 percent elastane) recover after wearing and allow sizing down. Vanity sizing also means a W32 from one brand may actually measure 33 or 34 inches at the waistband - always check the brand's size chart or read the garment measurements.
What inseam should I get for my height?
For men: 5 ft 4 in or shorter often suits a 28-inch inseam; 5 ft 6 in to 5 ft 8 in suits a 30-inch inseam; 5 ft 10 in to 6 ft suits a 32-inch inseam; 6 ft 1 in and above suits 34 inches or more. For women: below 5 ft 3 in typically fits a 28- to 30-inch inseam; 5 ft 4 in to 5 ft 6 in suits a 30- to 32-inch inseam; 5 ft 7 in and above suits 32 to 34 inches. Enter your height into the optional field to see a personalized suggestion.
How is Japanese jeans sizing different from US sizing?
Japanese women's jeans use odd numbers (5, 7, 9, 11, 13...) on a scale that differs from both US numeric and EU systems. A JP size 9 roughly equals US size 4 (W25) and EU 36. Japanese men's jeans often use the same W/L inch format as US jeans, though some brands use centimetre waist sizing similar to EU.
