Anniversary Calculator
Enter a special date to see exactly how long ago it was in years, months, and days. The calculator finds your next upcoming anniversary, tells you how many days remain until it arrives, and pairs the milestone with the traditional and modern gifts for that year. Works for wedding anniversaries, relationship start dates, work anniversaries, and any other date worth marking.
How the anniversary calculator works
The calculator takes your special start date and a reference date (defaulting to today) and works out three things at once. First, it counts the complete calendar years, months, and days that have passed since the start date, which gives you the time elapsed in a human-readable format. Second, it converts that span into total calendar days so you can see the full scope of the journey. Third, it projects forward to find the date of your next upcoming anniversary, then subtracts today to give you a countdown in days. All the date arithmetic handles month-length differences and leap years correctly, so you always get the exact anniversary date rather than an approximation.
Types of anniversaries you can calculate
The tool works for any date-based milestone. Wedding anniversaries are the most common use, but relationship anniversaries (the date two people officially became a couple), work anniversaries (first day at a job), friendship anniversaries, and any other recurring date all work the same way. Simply choose the event type from the dropdown so the output labels match, then enter the date. The gift guide section always reflects wedding anniversary traditions, which are the most widely documented, but the date math applies equally to any event.
Understanding the anniversary gift guide
The tradition of assigning a material or theme to each anniversary year dates back to medieval Germany, where husbands gave silver wreaths on the 25th anniversary and gold wreaths on the 50th. Emily Post popularized the extended list in the early twentieth century, and the American National Retail Jeweler Association later added modern alternatives for years where the traditional material is now impractical or out of fashion. The guide is advisory, not binding. If the traditional gift for a given year (such as pottery or steel) does not resonate, the modern column often offers something more personal, such as watches for the 15th or platinum for the 20th. For years above 45 where the table has no entry (years 46-49, 51-54, and 56-59), a heartfelt, personalized gift is always appropriate.
Milestone anniversaries and their significance
Certain anniversaries carry special cultural weight. The 1st (paper) represents the fragility of a new relationship, yet also its potential to be written upon. The 5th (wood) marks the first real sense of deep roots. The 10th (tin or aluminum) celebrates a decade of resilience and flexibility. The 25th is the Silver Jubilee, and the 50th is the Gold Jubilee, two milestones that communities and families celebrate broadly. The 40th (ruby) marks forty years of fiery passion, and the 60th (diamond) is considered the most precious of all, representing a love as enduring as the hardest natural substance on earth. Whether you are approaching your 1st or your 60th, the countdown and the gift guide on this page help you mark it with intention.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my wedding anniversary date?
Simply enter your wedding date in the calculator and set the reference date to today. The tool will tell you how many complete years have passed, show you the exact date of your next wedding anniversary, and count down the days remaining. It also identifies which anniversary number is coming next (for example, if you married 9 years ago, your next anniversary is the 10th) and shows the traditional and modern gifts for that milestone.
What is the traditional gift for the 25th anniversary?
The traditional gift for the 25th wedding anniversary is silver, which is why it is known as the Silver Jubilee. The modern alternative is sterling silver, staying within the same precious-metal theme. The 25th is one of the most widely celebrated milestone anniversaries, often marked with a special trip, a silver-themed party, or a piece of engraved silver jewellery or homeware.
What are the golden and silver anniversary years?
The Silver Jubilee falls on the 25th anniversary. The Golden Jubilee falls on the 50th anniversary. Both are long-established milestones in the Western anniversary tradition. The 60th anniversary is the Diamond Jubilee, the same name used for Queen Elizabeth II's record-breaking reign. The 40th is the Ruby, the 45th is the Sapphire, and the 55th is the Emerald anniversary.
Does the calculator account for leap years?
Yes. The date arithmetic counts actual calendar days, including all leap days, so the total-days figure and the next anniversary date are always accurate. The next anniversary always falls on the same calendar date (month and day) as the original event, regardless of whether any of the intervening years were leap years.
What if there is no gift listed for my anniversary year?
The traditional gift list has specific entries for years 1-15, then for selected milestones up to 60. Years such as 46-49 and 51-54 do not have established theme gifts. For those years, most etiquette guides simply recommend choosing a personalized or meaningful gift rather than following a material theme. The important thing is marking the milestone, not matching a prescribed material.
Can I use this for a work anniversary?
Yes. Select "Work anniversary" from the event-type dropdown and enter your hire date. The calculator will show how long you have been at the company in years, months, and days, find your next work anniversary, and count down to it. The gift guide section reflects wedding traditions, but the date math is identical for any recurring annual milestone.
Why does my anniversary fall on a different day of the week each year?
The calendar year is 365 days long (366 in a leap year), which is not evenly divisible by 7. So the day of the week shifts by one or two days each year. A wedding that happened on a Saturday will not fall on a Saturday again for several years. The calculator always shows the correct calendar date (month and day), which is what matters for the anniversary itself.
