Normal works well for most parties. Choose Hungry for sports events or game nights, Light for parties with lots of side dishes.
Large 14" pizzas offer the best value per slice at most pizzerias. Extra large is ideal for smaller groups who want fewer boxes.
When you serve garlic bread, salad, wings, or other sides, guests eat fewer pizza slices. Enabling this reduces the per-person slice count by about one slice.

  • Order 4 pizzas for 12 guests (8 adults, 4 kids).
  • You will have about 8 leftover slices - great for seconds or late arrivals.
  • Estimated total is $56.00, which comes to $4.67 per person.

Next stepConsider ordering one extra pizza if your crowd is unpredictable or if the event runs long - leftover pizza is rarely a problem.

Based on 3 slices per adult, 2 per child, 10-slice (large) pizzas.

How to calculate how many pizzas you need

The core formula is straightforward: multiply the number of adults by the slices each person will eat, do the same for kids at roughly half that rate, add the two totals together, then divide by the number of slices in one pizza and round up. For example, 8 adults eating 3 slices each and 4 kids eating 2 slices each need 24 + 8 = 32 slices. At 10 slices per large pizza, that is 32 / 10 = 3.2, rounded up to 4 pizzas. Rounding up is essential because you cannot order a fraction of a pizza, and running out of food is worse than having a few slices left over.

Pizza size and how it affects your order

Most pizzerias cut their pies into a standard number of slices by size: small 10-inch pizzas into 6 slices, medium 12-inch into 8 slices, large 14-inch into 10 slices, and extra-large 16-inch into 12 slices. A large pizza is the best value at almost every chain and independent shop because it delivers more pizza per dollar than smaller sizes. Extra-large pizzas make sense when your group is small enough to finish one variety before moving to the next, cutting down on the number of boxes and keeping everything hot. If your group has varied tastes, ordering multiple medium pizzas makes it easier to get different toppings.

Appetite levels, sides, and event type

Appetite varies enormously depending on the occasion. Office lunches and afternoon parties tend toward light eating (2 slices per adult) because guests are not yet hungry or are grazing on other food. Dinner parties and birthday celebrations land on normal (3 slices). Sports events, game nights, and post-activity gatherings push toward hungry or starving (4-5 slices) because people work up a real appetite. Serving sides such as garlic bread, wings, salad, or dessert reliably reduces the pizza slice count by about one slice per person - toggle that option to adjust the estimate. Kids aged 3-12 typically eat about half what adults do, and toddlers under 3 eat very little if any.

Cost and budget planning

Knowing the price per pizza lets you plan a precise budget before you call in the order. Enter the per-pizza price from your favorite shop and the calculator shows the total bill and cost per head. If you are splitting the cost among attendees, the per-person figure makes it easy to collect contributions. A useful rule: budget an extra pizza above the calculated minimum as a buffer - the marginal cost of one extra pie is small compared to the embarrassment of running short. Leftover cold pizza is also an excellent breakfast the next day.

Frequently asked questions

How many pizzas do I need for 10 people?

For 10 adults eating at a normal appetite (3 slices each), you need 30 slices. At 10 slices per large pizza, that is 3 pizzas exactly - but order 4 to have a buffer for seconds. If 5 of the 10 are children, you need around 25 slices, which rounds up to 3 large pizzas.

How many slices does a large pizza have?

A standard large pizza (about 14 inches in diameter) is cut into 10 slices at most pizzerias, though some cut it into 8. A medium (12 inches) usually has 8 slices, a small (10 inches) has 6, and an extra large (16 inches) has 12. Always confirm with the specific shop if precision matters.

How many slices does the average person eat?

Most adults eat 2-3 slices at a casual party, 3-4 when pizza is the only main dish, and up to 5 at a hungry sports event. Children aged 3-12 average 1-2 slices. The key variable is whether other food is being served - sides and appetizers reduce pizza consumption noticeably.

Is it better to order too many or too few pizzas?

Almost always order more rather than less. Leftover pizza keeps well in the refrigerator for up to 4 days and reheats easily. Running short mid-party is disruptive, while a few extra slices costs very little. This calculator rounds up to the next whole pie exactly for this reason.

How do I plan for dietary restrictions?

The safest approach is to ask guests about dietary needs in advance and set aside clearly labeled pizzas for vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or allergen-sensitive guests. As a rough rule, budget one dedicated pizza for every 4-6 guests with the same restriction, and keep those boxes away from other pies to avoid cross-contamination.

What size pizza gives the best value?

Larger pizzas almost always cost less per square inch of pizza. A 14-inch large typically costs 30-40% more than a 10-inch small but delivers about 96% more pizza by area. Order the largest size your group can finish before it cools if value matters more than variety.
