Why calculate a birth date from a death date?
Genealogists frequently encounter records, such as death certificates, obituaries, tombstones and census entries, that state an age at death but not a date of birth. Working backward from the death date and the recorded age is a standard technique for estimating when a person was born. This is especially useful for people born before civil birth registration was common (before the mid-1800s in most of Europe and the Americas), when baptism registers, church records and family bibles are often the only primary sources. The calculated date is an estimate, but it narrows the search window when hunting for birth records.
Calendar-month vs 30-day-month method
There are two ways to subtract an age from a death date. The calendar-month method uses the true length of each month (28, 29, 30 or 31 days), which is the same arithmetic most modern software performs. The 30-day-month method, also called the tombstone or vital-record method, treats every month as exactly 30 days long, giving a 360-day year. Many 18th and 19th century tombstone carvers and clerks used this convention, so if the age carved in stone or written on an old certificate was calculated that way, applying the same method when working backward will often reproduce the birth date the recorder originally had in mind. In practice the two methods agree roughly two-thirds of the time; they differ when the days portion crosses a month boundary.
How to read an age from a tombstone
Victorian and earlier tombstones often inscribe the full age as "Aged X years, Y months, Z days." That three-part figure is the most complete data you can have, and entering all three parts gives the most precise birth date estimate. Some stones show only years and months, or just years. When only years are given, the birth year is uncertain by one year: if the person turned 65 in March but died in January at 64, the age carved would read 64 years, yet the birth year was the same as if they had died at 65. This ambiguity is why the calculator reports a possible range of two years when you enter years only, and why adding even just the month can collapse that to a single year.
Accuracy and cross-checking
Calculated birth dates are estimates. The original age may have been rounded, remembered incorrectly, or recorded in a different calendar system (particularly for deaths before 1752 in Britain and its colonies, or before various later dates in other countries that adopted the Gregorian calendar late). Always cross-check the result against a primary birth record, a baptism register, a census age listed at a nearby date, or another independent source. When two or more records agree on a calculated birth date, confidence in the estimate rises considerably.

Frequently asked questions
Why does the calculator give a range of two years when I enter years only?
When only the age in full years is known, the birth year cannot be determined exactly. Suppose the death date is October 1885 and the age is 45: the person could have been born in 1839 (if their birthday had already passed in 1885) or in 1840 (if the birthday had not yet come by October). Entering the months and days of age narrows this to a single year. If you truly have no months or days, treat the two-year range as your search window.
What is the 30-day-month (tombstone) method?
Many historical clerks and tombstone carvers treated every month as exactly 30 days when figuring out how old someone was at death. To reverse that calculation accurately, you need to subtract using the same 30-day convention. This calculator lets you switch between the exact calendar-month method and the 30-day method, so you can match whichever convention was used when the original age was recorded.
Can I use this for living people?
Yes. The math is the same whether the person is still alive or not. If you know someone is currently a certain age and you know today's date, entering today as the "death date" and the current age gives you their estimated birth year. For living people you almost certainly do not have exact months and days of age, so the result will be a year range.
What if the death certificate shows age in months only (for an infant)?
Set the years field to 0, enter the months, and if available the days. The calculator will subtract only the months and days, giving a birth date in the same year as the death. This is common for infant mortality records.
Why might my result be off by a few days compared to the actual birth record?
Several factors can cause small discrepancies: the original age may have been rounded or mis-transcribed; the calendar convention (30-day vs exact) may differ from the one used in the original record; or the death date itself may be approximate. A one or two day difference is common and expected. If the mismatch is larger, try switching between the calendar-month and 30-day-month methods to see which matches your primary source.
Does this work for very old historical dates?
Yes, for dates in the Gregorian calendar. If the record predates your country's switch to the Gregorian calendar (1752 in Britain, earlier in many Catholic countries), ages may have been reckoned under the Julian calendar, which runs 10 to 13 days behind Gregorian depending on the century. For pre-switch dates you may need to apply an Old Style to New Style calendar conversion as a separate step.
