GWA Calculator

Enter your subject grades and credit units to calculate your General Weighted Average (GWA). This calculator uses the Philippine 1.00 to 5.00 grading scale, where 1.00 is the highest grade and 3.00 is the minimum passing mark at most universities. You get your GWA, honor standing, US 4.0 GPA equivalent, percentage equivalent, and a full subject-by-subject breakdown. Results update instantly as you type.

Your GWA is 1.75 - Cum Laude

  • Your GWA of 1.75 qualifies for Latin honors (Cum Laude) at most Philippine universities.
  • This calculation covers 15.0 total credit units across the subjects you entered.
  • Your approximate US GPA equivalent is 3.25 on the 4.0 scale.
  • The percentage equivalent for your GWA is approximately 90%.

Next stepMaintain your current average to secure your Latin honor standing at graduation.

Formula

GWA=i=1n(gi×ui)i=1nuiGWA = \dfrac{\sum_{i=1}^{n}(g_i \times u_i)}{\sum_{i=1}^{n} u_i}

Worked example

A student takes 5 subjects: grades 1.50, 1.75, 2.00, 1.25, 2.25 each with 3 units. Weighted sum = (1.50+1.75+2.00+1.25+2.25) x 3 = 8.75 x 3 = 26.25. Total units = 15. GWA = 26.25 / 15 = 1.75, which qualifies for Cum Laude.

What is GWA and how is it calculated?

General Weighted Average (GWA) is the official academic performance metric used across Philippine universities and colleges. Unlike a simple average that treats all subjects equally, GWA weights each subject grade by the number of credit units it carries. A 3-unit lecture subject counts three times as much as a 1-unit laboratory course in the final average. The formula is GWA = Sum of (Grade x Units) / Sum of (Total Units). In the Philippine system, grades run from 1.00 (Excellent) to 5.00 (Fail), so a lower GWA number means better academic performance - the opposite of the American GPA system. The passing grade at most universities is 3.00, though some institutions set 3.00 as a conditional pass and require subjects to be retaken.

Latin honor thresholds and what they mean

Philippine universities award Latin honors at graduation based on the cumulative GWA a student earns across all semesters of their degree program. The three standard distinctions are Summa Cum Laude (typically a GWA of 1.20 or below), Magna Cum Laude (1.21 to 1.45), and Cum Laude (1.46 to 1.75). Exact cut-offs vary by institution: the University of the Philippines uses 1.20 / 1.45 / 1.75, while De La Salle University and the University of Santo Tomas apply slightly different thresholds. Most schools also require a minimum number of units earned at the granting institution and prohibit any grade of 5.00 or repeated subjects. Always confirm the exact requirements with your registrar because the thresholds shown here are typical, not universal.

How to use this calculator

Enter the grade and credit units for each subject. Subjects 1 through 5 are pre-filled with sample values so you can see results immediately. Set any subject grade to 0 or leave its units at 0 to exclude it from the calculation (subjects 6 to 10 are optional and are excluded when both grade and units are 0). The calculator gives you: your GWA, the total credit units counted, your honor standing, a US 4.0 GPA equivalent for international applications, a percentage equivalent, and the best and worst individual subject grades. The "Show your work" panel below the result walks through the weighted-sum arithmetic step by step with your actual numbers substituted in, so you can verify the result by hand.

GWA vs GPA - converting for international applications

When applying to graduate schools or employers outside the Philippines, you will often need to convert your GWA to the 4.0 GPA scale standard in North America. The most widely used approximation maps 1.00 = 4.00, 1.50 = 3.50, 2.00 = 3.00, 2.50 = 2.50, 3.00 = 2.00, and 5.00 = 0.00, with proportional interpolation between those anchor points. This tool applies that mapping automatically. Note that graduate admissions committees usually accept this conversion at face value if you also submit the official transcript showing the raw 1.00-5.00 grades and a note explaining the inverted scale. The World Education Services (WES) and similar credential evaluation agencies will perform their own conversion if required.

Frequently asked questions

Is a lower or higher GWA better in the Philippine system?

Lower is better. The Philippine grading scale runs from 1.00 (Excellent) down to 5.00 (Failed), so a GWA of 1.50 is much better than a GWA of 2.50. This is the opposite of the American GPA system, where 4.0 is the best possible score. When converting for international applications, a Philippine GWA of 1.00 is equivalent to a US GPA of 4.0.

What GWA do I need for Latin honors?

At most Philippine universities, you need a cumulative GWA of 1.75 or below for Cum Laude, 1.45 or below for Magna Cum Laude, and 1.20 or below for Summa Cum Laude. These thresholds are based on your entire degree program, not just a single semester. Exact cut-offs differ by school, so check with your registrar for the official policy at your institution.

What is the passing GWA in the Philippines?

A grade of 3.00 is the standard passing mark at most Philippine universities. A GWA above 3.00 typically means you failed one or more subjects, which can trigger academic probation or require retaking the course. Some schools mark 4.00 as "Incomplete" or "Conditional," meaning you must complete requirements within a set period or the grade drops to 5.00 (Fail).

How is GWA different from a simple average?

A simple average treats all subjects equally regardless of their credit hours. GWA weights each subject by the number of units it carries: a 3-unit subject affects your average three times as much as a 1-unit subject. This matters because major subjects and laboratory courses often carry more units. If you get a 2.50 in a 1-unit PE class and a 1.25 in a 3-unit major, the major grade dominates your GWA much more than a simple average would suggest.

Can I use this calculator for the University of the Philippines (UP)?

Yes. UP uses the same 1.00 to 5.00 Philippine grading scale with the same GWA formula. UP-specific grades include 1.00, 1.25, 1.50, 1.75, 2.00, 2.25, 2.50, 2.75, 3.00 (Passing), 4.00 (Incomplete), and 5.00 (Fail). Enter your UP grades and unit weights in the fields above and the calculation is identical. UP Latin honor cut-offs are 1.20 (Summa), 1.45 (Magna), and 1.75 (Cum Laude), which match the thresholds shown in this calculator.

How do I include incomplete or failed subjects in my GWA?

If a subject is marked "Incomplete" (grade 4.00) and has not yet been resolved, many universities exclude it from the semester GWA calculation until a final grade is awarded. A grade of 5.00 (Fail) is typically included and will significantly pull your GWA upward (toward the worse end of the scale). If you are retaking a subject, check your school policy - some schools use the new grade and some average both attempts. Enter the grade that your school counts in the official computation.
