Gallons to Cups Converter

Enter a volume in gallons to get the equivalent number of cups, plus quarts, pints, and fluid ounces, all in one view. Choose between the US liquid gallon (the cooking standard), the US dry gallon, or the UK imperial gallon. You can also reverse the conversion by typing in cups. The math is shown step by step so you can check it at a glance.

Your details

The US liquid gallon (3.785 L) is the everyday cooking gallon. The US dry gallon (4.405 L) is used for grain. The UK imperial gallon (4.546 L) is used in the UK, Canada, and some Caribbean countries.

1.0000 gallon(s) = 16.0000 cups

  • 1.0000 US liquid gallon(s) is 16.0000 US cups.
  • That is also 4.0000 quarts, 8.0000 pints, or 128.00 fluid ounces.
  • The US liquid gallon is the standard for American cooking recipes, water jugs, and milk cartons.

Next stepNeed to scale a recipe? Multiply each ingredient by the same gallon factor to keep proportions correct.

Formula

cups=gallons×16(US liquid),gallons=cups16\text{cups} = \text{gallons} \times 16 \quad (\text{US liquid}), \qquad \text{gallons} = \dfrac{\text{cups}}{16}

Worked example

2.5 US liquid gallons: 2.5 x 16 = 40 cups, or equivalently 10 quarts, 20 pints, and 320 fluid ounces.

How to convert gallons to cups

The conversion factor for a US liquid gallon is exactly 16: one gallon equals 16 cups. Multiply any number of gallons by 16 to get cups. To reverse the conversion, divide the number of cups by 16. For example, 3 gallons equals 48 cups, and 24 cups equals 1.5 gallons.

The same arithmetic applies to other gallon types with different factors. One US dry gallon equals approximately 18.618 cups, and one UK imperial gallon equals approximately 19.215 US cups.

US liquid gallon vs. US dry gallon vs. UK imperial gallon

There are three gallon definitions in common use:

  • US liquid gallon: 3.785 liters, equal to 4 quarts or 128 fluid ounces. This is the standard for American cooking, beverages, and everyday volume measurement.
  • US dry gallon: approximately 4.405 liters, equal to exactly 1/8 of a US bushel. It is used in the grain and produce trade but almost never in cooking recipes.
  • UK imperial gallon: exactly 4.54609 liters, used in the United Kingdom, Canada, and parts of the Caribbean. A UK gallon is about 20% larger than a US liquid gallon, so a UK recipe calling for "1 gallon of milk" means significantly more liquid than an American one.
Always confirm which gallon type a source is using before scaling a recipe or a liquid order.

Cup sizes and why they matter

This converter uses the US customary cup of exactly 8 US fluid ounces (236.588 mL). That is the cup measuring spoon used in American cooking. Other cup definitions exist: the metric cup is 250 mL (used in Australia, Canada, and Japan), and the UK imperial cup was historically 284 mL but is rarely used today. If a recipe comes from outside the United States, the cup size may differ slightly from this converter's assumption.

Practical cooking conversions

The US volume ladder is: 1 gallon = 4 quarts = 8 pints = 16 cups = 32 gills = 128 fluid ounces. Knowing the ladder lets you scale up or down without a calculator:

  • Half a gallon = 8 cups (a common milk carton size)
  • A quart = 4 cups
  • A pint = 2 cups
  • A standard pot of coffee is about 12 cups (0.75 gallons)
  • A typical soup pot holds 6 to 8 quarts (24 to 32 cups)
For large-batch cooking or brewing, it is easiest to keep everything in gallons until the final step, then multiply by 16 to portion into cup-size servings.

Frequently asked questions

How many cups are in a gallon?

There are 16 US cups in one US liquid gallon. Each cup holds 8 fluid ounces, so a gallon contains 128 fluid ounces. If you are using a US dry gallon the answer is about 18.618 cups, and for a UK imperial gallon it is about 19.215 US cups.

How many cups are in half a gallon?

Half a US liquid gallon equals 8 cups. This matches the standard 64-fluid-ounce (half-gallon) carton of milk or juice you find in most US grocery stores.

How do I convert cups to gallons?

Divide the number of cups by 16. For example, 40 cups divided by 16 equals 2.5 gallons. You can use the reverse input on this calculator by entering the cup count in the "Cups (reverse)" field.

Is a UK gallon the same as a US gallon?

No. A UK (imperial) gallon is about 4.546 liters, while a US liquid gallon is about 3.785 liters. The UK gallon is roughly 20% larger. This matters most when following a British recipe or reading a UK fuel price: one UK gallon of petrol means more volume than one US gallon of gasoline.

How many cups is 2 gallons?

2 US liquid gallons equals 32 cups. That is 8 quarts, 16 pints, or 256 fluid ounces. Useful for scaling large recipes or preparing punch for a party.

How many cups is 5 gallons?

5 US liquid gallons equals 80 cups. A standard 5-gallon water jug or homebrew bucket therefore holds 80 cups, 20 quarts, or 640 fluid ounces.

What is the difference between a US dry gallon and a US liquid gallon?

A US dry gallon (4.405 L) is defined as 1/8 of a US bushel and is about 16.4% larger than a US liquid gallon (3.785 L). The dry gallon is used in commerce for goods like grain and cranberries, but cooking recipes almost always mean the liquid gallon.
