How sauna calorie burn is calculated
This calculator uses the Metabolic Equivalent of Task (MET) method, the standard approach in exercise physiology. The formula is: Calories = MET x body weight in kg x time in hours. A MET of 1.0 equals your resting metabolic rate (the energy your body uses just to stay alive). Sitting in a sauna is typically assigned a MET of about 1.5, meaning your body is working at 1.5 times its resting rate. The elevated core temperature and heart rate caused by heat exposure account for that increase. Be aware of where that 1.5 actually comes from: the Compendium of Physical Activities, the reference list of measured MET values, contains no entry for sauna bathing at all. The nearest measured passive-heat activities are "bathing, sitting" at 1.5 METs and "whirlpool, sitting" at 1.3 METs, so 1.5 is a reasonable stand-in rather than a validated sauna figure. The sauna-type and intensity adjustments in this calculator are modelling assumptions on top of that, not measured values, which is why the output should be read as a rough estimate.
Traditional, infrared, and steam saunas compared
Traditional Finnish saunas operate at 80 to 100 degrees Celsius with low humidity (10 to 20 percent). The very high dry heat creates the strongest cardiovascular response and, at equivalent durations, tends to produce the highest calorie burn. Infrared saunas operate at 50 to 65 degrees Celsius and heat the body directly rather than the surrounding air. Because the ambient temperature is lower, many people tolerate longer sessions, and the total calories burned over a longer session can match or exceed a shorter traditional session. Steam rooms operate at about 45 degrees Celsius but with 100 percent humidity, which impairs the body's ability to cool through evaporation, keeping skin and core temperature elevated. The calorie burn per minute sits between traditional and infrared. All three types produce measurable cardiovascular benefits at regular use, according to research by Laukkanen et al. (2018).
What the calorie burn actually means for weight management
A single 20-minute sauna session at 70 kg burns roughly 35 kcal in terms of actual fat oxidation. That is a genuine, if modest, contribution. However, the scale typically drops more dramatically immediately after a sauna session because sweating removes fluid, and each litre of sweat weighs about 1 kg. That fluid loss is temporary: it is replaced as soon as you drink water, and it does not represent fat loss. The fat-equivalent figure this calculator shows is the honest number, derived by dividing the calculated calories by 7,700 (the approximate energy density of adipose tissue). Repeat sessions, especially when combined with regular exercise and a healthy diet, accumulate over time and contribute to calorie balance, but sauna alone is not a primary weight-loss tool.
Factors that affect how many calories you burn
Body weight is the single biggest variable. A 100 kg person burns about 43 percent more calories per minute in a sauna than a 70 kg person at the same MET. Session length has a linear effect: doubling the time doubles the calories. Sauna type and temperature shift the effective MET by roughly 10 to 15 percent across the three common types. Fitness level matters too: trained individuals tend to have a higher cardiac output and may sustain longer sessions, but per-minute calorie burn is not necessarily higher.
