What is batting strike rate?

Batting strike rate (SR) measures how quickly a batter scores runs relative to the number of deliveries they face. It is expressed as runs per 100 balls, so an SR of 75 means a batter scores 75 runs for every 100 balls faced. A strike rate of exactly 100 means scoring one run per ball, the baseline for "not losing ground" in most limited-overs cricket. Strike rate is distinct from batting average, which measures runs per dismissal: a batter can have a high average but a low strike rate (playing long, slow innings) or a low average but a high strike rate (attacking briefly). Both metrics matter, which is why coaches use them together.

How to calculate batting strike rate

The formula is: Strike Rate = (Runs Scored / Balls Faced) x 100. For example, a batter who scores 72 runs off 48 balls has an SR of (72 / 48) x 100 = 150. Wides are not counted as balls faced, but no-balls are (the batter is on strike and can be dismissed, except bowled). If calculating a career strike rate, sum all runs across all innings and all balls faced across those innings before applying the formula. Scoring a duck off one ball gives an SR of 0; never getting out but never scoring gives an SR of 0. A not-out does not affect SR at all because SR divides by balls, not innings.

Format context: why the same SR means different things

The ideal strike rate depends entirely on the format. In T20 cricket, teams typically need to score at about 8-9 runs per over (an SR of 133-150) to post competitive totals; an SR of 80 from a T20 batter is likely too slow unless they are a designated "anchor." In 50-over ODI cricket, an SR of 85-95 in the middle overs is considered efficient for a No. 4 or 5 batter building an innings, while openers are often expected to push toward or past 100. In Test cricket, where overs are unlimited, an SR of 50-60 is entirely respectable; even 40 can be valuable if the batter is occupying the crease and absorbing pressure. Reverse-solve: finding runs or balls needed

The target mode uses the same formula rearranged. To find the extra runs needed to reach a target SR without facing more balls: Extra runs = (Balls x Target SR / 100) - Current runs. For instance, if you have scored 30 off 40 balls (SR 75) and want to finish the over at SR 150, you need (40 x 150 / 100) - 30 = 30 more runs from the same 40 balls faced, which is impossible in one ball (you would need 30 sixes off the next delivery). The calculator rounds up to the nearest whole run because partial runs are not possible. The "balls remaining" mode finds the maximum number of additional deliveries you can face before your SR drops below the target: Max total balls = Runs x 100 / Target SR. This helps batters and coaches understand how many dot balls they can absorb before the required rate becomes unachievable.

What is a good batting strike rate in T20 cricket?

In T20 cricket, an SR above 150 is considered elite and is associated with match-winning performances. An SR in the 120-149 range is good and sufficient for most batting positions. Below 100 in T20 is generally a liability unless the batter is specifically playing a holding role; teams usually need at least some batters above 130 to post competitive totals of 160-180 or more.

How is batting strike rate different from batting average?

Batting average is runs scored divided by the number of times a batter is dismissed. It measures how many runs you score per innings on average. Strike rate measures how quickly you score: runs per 100 balls faced. You can have a high average (you rarely get out) with a low strike rate (you score slowly), or a high strike rate with a low average (you score quickly but get out often). Both are needed together to assess a batter fully.

Does a dot ball lower my strike rate?

Yes, every dot ball (a delivery faced without scoring) increases the denominator in the formula without changing the numerator, so it reduces the cumulative strike rate. Over a 10-ball span, one dot in five reduces an SR of 100 to 90 if the other balls score at the same rate. This is why "running between the wickets" and avoiding dot balls is a key coaching objective in limited-overs cricket.

Do wides and no-balls count in the strike rate calculation?

Wides are not added to the balls-faced count because the batter was not on strike for a legal delivery, so they do not affect the batter's personal strike rate. No-balls, however, are counted as a ball faced (the batter was on strike and could, for example, hit the ball), so a dot ball off a no-ball still increases the balls-faced count while adding zero to runs. A run scored off a no-ball is credited to the batter's runs if they hit it, so that does count.

How do I calculate career strike rate from multiple innings?

Sum all runs scored across every innings, then sum all balls faced across those same innings, then apply the formula: Career SR = (Total runs / Total balls) x 100. Do not average the per-innings strike rates because that weights each innings equally regardless of length. For example, if you scored 50 off 30 balls in one innings and 10 off 40 balls in another, the correct career SR is (60 / 70) x 100 = 85.71, not the average of 167 and 25.
