A 5'8" (68 in, 1.727 m) male walking: step length = 0.415 × 1.727 = 0.717 m; stride = 2 × 0.717 = 1.434 m (4.70 ft, 56.5 in). Steps per mile = 1609.344 / 0.717 = 2,245. At 120 steps per minute, speed = 1.434 m × 60 = 86.0 m/min = 3.20 mph.
Stride length vs step length: what is the difference?
A step is the distance from one foot strike to the next foot strike on the other foot. A stride is two steps: from your left foot landing to the next time your left foot lands (or right to right). Most fitness trackers count steps, so your step count is the number of individual foot strikes. Stride length is always twice the step length, and this calculator reports both so you can match whichever figure your device uses.
How the two calculation modes work
Height estimate mode uses a sex-adjusted multiplier derived from published biomechanics research: step length is approximately 0.415 times height for walking and about 0.46 times height for running. These factors are averages, so your actual stride may be 5-15% longer or shorter depending on your gait, limb proportions, and speed.
Measured mode is more accurate. Walk or run a distance you know precisely, such as a 400-metre athletics track, a calibrated GPS route, or a measured 0.25-mile path. Count every foot strike (one step per contact, so 500 steps on a 0.25-mile loop would give a step length of 0.25 mi / 500 = 0.000264 mi, or about 0.805 ft). The calculator does the rest.
Steps per mile and steps per kilometre
Once your step length is known, steps per mile = 5,280 ft / step length (ft). Equivalently, steps per km = 1,000 m / step length (m). These numbers matter if you are aiming for step-count goals. A common target is 10,000 steps, but what that means in distance varies widely: for a 5'4" woman walking, it is roughly 4.5 miles; for a 6'2" man, it might be 5.3 miles. Knowing your personal figure makes daily step goals more meaningful than a generic number.
Cadence, stride length, and running speed
Running speed is the product of stride length and stride rate (strides per minute). Because cadence is measured in steps per minute, strides per minute = cadence / 2, so:
Speed = stride length (m) x cadence (spm) / 2
This means you can improve your pace by increasing either your stride length or your cadence. Most running coaches recommend keeping cadence between 170 and 180 steps per minute and letting speed come mainly from relaxed, efficient extension rather than overstriding. Overstriding, landing with your foot well ahead of your centre of mass, increases braking forces and injury risk even if it temporarily adds stride length.

Frequently asked questions
What is the average stride length for adults?
Average adult stride length is roughly 2.1 to 2.5 feet (64 to 76 cm) for walking, and 4.5 to 5.5 feet (137 to 168 cm) for running. Men tend to have slightly longer strides than women at the same pace, primarily because of height differences. Taller people have longer limbs and therefore longer natural strides at any speed.
How many steps per mile do I take?
It depends entirely on your step length. A rough average is about 2,000 steps per mile for men and 2,200 for women when walking, dropping to roughly 1,700 and 1,900 when running. This calculator works out your personal figure once you enter your height or measure a known distance. Plug your result into a step-count goal to convert miles to steps for your body.
Does a longer stride mean I run faster?
Not necessarily. Speed equals stride length times stride rate (strides per minute). A very long stride can actually slow you down if it comes from overstriding, because landing with your foot too far ahead acts as a brake. Research from elite running suggests the most efficient runners combine a moderate stride length with a high cadence (170-180 steps per minute), not an exceptionally long reach.
How do I measure my stride length accurately?
Find a flat surface with a known distance, such as a 400-metre track or a measured road segment. Walk or run it at your normal pace and count every foot strike from start to finish. Divide the total distance (in metres or feet) by your step count to get your step length, then multiply by 2 to get your stride length. Counting over a longer distance (at least 200 m) reduces the effect of a few miscounts.
What is cadence and what is a good running cadence?
Cadence is the number of steps you take per minute. Most recreational runners land between 150 and 170 steps per minute; elite runners typically run at 180 or above. A higher cadence with the same speed means a shorter stride, which tends to reduce overstriding and the impact forces that lead to shin splints and knee injuries. A common training goal is to raise your natural cadence by about 5-10% at the same effort level.
How many steps are in a 5K, 10K, or marathon?
Divide the race distance (in metres) by your step length (in metres). A 5K is 5,000 m, a 10K is 10,000 m, and a marathon is 42,195 m. For example, a runner with a step length of 0.8 m takes 5,000 / 0.8 = 6,250 steps in a 5K, 12,500 steps in a 10K, and about 52,744 steps in a marathon.
