Steps to Miles Calculator
Enter your step count to see how many miles (or kilometres) you walked. Choose your sex and height for a personalised stride estimate, or enter your measured stride length for the most accurate result. You can also add your weight and pace to get calories burned alongside the distance.
How to convert steps to miles
The conversion from steps to miles hinges on stride length: the distance covered in one step, measured from the toe-off of one foot to the heel-strike of the other. Divide the length of a mile (5,280 feet) by your stride length in feet, and you get steps per mile. Divide your total steps by that figure to get miles. For example, a woman who is 5 ft 6 in tall has an estimated stride of about 2.34 ft, which means roughly 2,254 steps per mile. If she walks 8,000 steps, that is about 3.55 miles. Because stride length varies by height and sex, the result changes noticeably between people. That is why this calculator offers three modes: a quick average, a height-based estimate using the American College of Sports Medicine regression, and an exact entry for your own measured stride.
How many steps are in a mile?
There is no single universal answer. At a moderate walking pace (around 3 mph), most people take between 1,900 and 2,500 steps to cover one mile. The most cited average is about 2,000-2,200 steps for women and 1,900-2,100 for men, with shorter people taking more steps and taller people taking fewer. Running shortens ground contact time and lengthens stride, so a runner takes considerably fewer steps per mile, often 1,400 to 1,800, depending on pace and height. The table above shows detailed estimates by height and sex. If you know your own stride length, the exact-mode calculator is the most reliable approach.
Daily step goals and what the research says
The popular 10,000-step target originated as a marketing slogan for a Japanese pedometer brand in 1965, not a clinical guideline. However, research published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that higher daily step counts are associated with lower all-cause mortality, with benefits levelling off at around 7,000-8,000 steps per day for older adults and continuing to accrue up to at least 10,000 for younger adults. For the average adult, 10,000 steps is roughly 4 to 5 miles, depending on stride. The American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate activity per week, which maps to roughly 7,000-8,000 steps a day if the activity is brisk walking. Even modest increases from a low baseline, such as adding 2,000 steps (about a mile), carry measurable health benefits.
Calories burned per mile: what affects the estimate
Calorie burn during walking and running depends primarily on body weight and distance, not speed. Research published in Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise found that the net energy cost of walking one mile is approximately 0.30 to 0.37 kcal per pound of body weight, and for running it rises to 0.63-0.75 kcal per pound. A 150 lb person walking one mile at a moderate pace burns roughly 50 kcal; running that same mile burns closer to 100 kcal. Add your weight and select your pace in this calculator to get a personalised estimate alongside your step-to-mile conversion.

Frequently asked questions
How many steps in a mile?
Most people take between 1,900 and 2,500 steps per mile, depending on height, sex, and pace. The most common average is about 2,000 steps for men and 2,200 for women walking at a moderate pace. Runners take fewer steps, around 1,400 to 1,800 per mile, because their stride is longer. Enter your height in this calculator for a more personal estimate.
How do I measure my own stride length?
Walk exactly 10 steps at your normal pace, then measure the total distance from your starting heel to your finishing heel. Divide that distance by 10. For example, if 10 steps cover 22 feet, your stride length is 2.2 ft. Enter that figure in the "Exact (enter your stride length)" mode for the most accurate distance conversion.
How many miles is 10,000 steps?
For most adults, 10,000 steps is roughly 4 to 5 miles. A 5'6" woman with a 2.34 ft stride covers about 4.43 miles; a 5'10" man with a 2.60 ft stride covers about 4.92 miles. Use this calculator with your own height to get the number specific to your stride.
Does walking speed affect the distance calculation?
Walking speed has a very small effect on distance: at faster speeds your stride lengthens slightly, meaning you cover a tiny bit more ground per step. The calculator uses your entered stride length (or estimates it from height), so the distance output stays accurate. Speed does affect calorie burn, which is why the pace selector influences the calories output but not the distance output.
Can I use this calculator to convert miles to steps?
Yes, indirectly. The steps-per-mile output tells you how many steps equal one mile at your stride. Multiply that number by however many miles you want to walk. For example, if your steps per mile is 2,200 and you are targeting 3 miles, you need about 6,600 steps.
Why does sex affect stride length?
On average, men are taller than women and carry a greater proportion of leg length relative to total height, both of which produce a longer stride. Even controlling for height, research finds a small male-female difference in stride ratio. The calculator applies the ACSM regression coefficients (0.415 for men, 0.413 for women) to account for this, but the difference at the same height is minor, roughly one or two inches.
