What is basal body temperature and why does it shift?
Basal body temperature (BBT) is the lowest temperature your body reaches during rest, measured immediately on waking before any physical activity, eating, or drinking. In a typical menstrual cycle, BBT stays relatively low during the follicular phase while estrogen dominates, then rises by about 0.2 to 0.5 degrees Celsius (0.4 to 0.9 degrees Fahrenheit) after ovulation as the corpus luteum releases progesterone. Progesterone increases resting metabolic rate, which is why even a small but consistent rise in BBT signals that ovulation has occurred. The shift is detected retrospectively, which means BBT charting confirms that ovulation happened rather than predicting it in advance.
The FAM coverline: how it is calculated
The Fertility Awareness Method (FAM) defines the coverline as the highest of the six pre-ovulation temperatures plus one tenth of a degree Fahrenheit, which is 0.05 degrees Celsius on a metric chart. Three consecutive readings that all sit at or above this coverline confirm the thermal shift, and the official temperature rule adds one extra safeguard: the third high reading must clear the coverline by at least 0.3 degrees Fahrenheit (0.15 degrees Celsius). If it does not, you wait for a fourth reading anywhere above the coverline instead. The coverline concept was popularized by Toni Weschler in "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" and is the foundation of most symptothermal methods taught today.
Wake-time temperature adjustment
Temperature rises gradually after waking as metabolism increases. Standard FAM guidance is that BBT increases roughly 0.05 degrees Celsius (about 0.09 degrees Fahrenheit) for every 30 minutes you stay in bed after your usual wake time. Conversely, if you wake 30 minutes earlier than usual, your temperature will be about 0.05 degrees Celsius lower than it would normally be. This calculator applies that correction automatically: it subtracts minutes-earlier offsets and adds minutes-later offsets so you always compare apples to apples. For accuracy, try to take your temperature at the same time every morning after at least three to four hours of unbroken sleep.
Factors that can disrupt BBT accuracy
Many situations raise or lower BBT independently of the hormone cycle, so unusual readings should be flagged rather than deleted. Fever or illness, alcohol consumption the night before, sleeping in a warm or cold room, travel across time zones, stress, certain medications (particularly antihistamines and sleep aids), breastfeeding, and shift work are the most common confounders. Most charting systems recommend marking disrupted readings with a note rather than removing them, as the overall pattern across many days is more informative than any single point.

What is the best time to take my basal body temperature?
Take your temperature first thing in the morning, before getting out of bed, speaking, or eating or drinking anything. You should have had at least three to four consecutive hours of sleep. Using a memory-recall thermometer helps if you tend to forget to read the display before moving. Consistency matters more than the exact time: if 6:30 am is your usual time, aim for within 30 minutes of that every day, and use the wake-time correction feature in this calculator on days when you wake significantly earlier or later.
How long does it take to detect ovulation with BBT charting?
You can only confirm ovulation after the fact, once you see three consecutive elevated readings. Most people need at least two to three full cycles of charting to identify their personal pattern, since cycle length, the day of ovulation, and the size of the temperature shift can vary. Apps and physical charts both work well; the important thing is recording a reading every day and noting any disruptions.
Can BBT charting be used to prevent pregnancy?
BBT charting is one component of the Fertility Awareness Method, which can be used for natural family planning. However, BBT alone is less effective than the full symptothermal method, which combines temperature charting with cervical mucus observation and sometimes cervical position. Perfect-use failure rates for the full symptothermal method are around 0.4-2% per year, but typical-use rates are higher. Talk to a certified FAM instructor or healthcare provider before relying on it as contraception.
What does it mean if my temperature stays elevated for more than 18 days after ovulation?
An elevated luteal phase temperature that stays high for 18 or more consecutive days after the thermal shift is a strong early sign of pregnancy, because the placenta takes over progesterone production and maintains the temperature elevation. This is sometimes called the "pregnancy rule of 18." Take a home pregnancy test and confirm with your healthcare provider.
My temperature dropped just before the thermal shift. Is that normal?
Yes. Many people experience a brief pre-ovulatory dip (sometimes called the "ovulation dip") on the day before or the day of ovulation, caused by the LH surge. It is not universal and not required to confirm ovulation; the thermal shift itself is the key indicator. If you see a dip followed by a sustained rise, it is often a useful retrospective marker for pinpointing ovulation day on your chart.
How does BBT differ between a pregnant and non-pregnant cycle?
In a non-pregnant cycle, BBT rises after ovulation and then drops back toward baseline about one to two days before menstruation, as progesterone levels fall. In a pregnant cycle, the corpus luteum and then the placenta continue to produce progesterone, so BBT stays elevated throughout early pregnancy. If you notice a second rise in temperature (a "triphasic pattern") or temperatures that simply never come down, those are additional, though not definitive, early pregnancy signs.
