How to find the Minecraft End Portal without following the Eye of Ender
When you throw an Eye of Ender it flies toward the nearest stronghold, which houses the End Portal. Most players chase the Eye until it lands, then dig. A faster approach is triangulation: throw from two different positions, record the exact bearing each time, and let the calculator intersect those two lines. This avoids spending many Eyes just to follow their arc, and it works from the surface with no mods or cheats. The technique works in both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition because the coordinate system is identical in both. Strongholds always generate between 1,408 and 2,688 blocks from the world origin (0,0), so if your result falls inside that ring you have a valid match. Each world seed has exactly 3 strongholds in Java (128 total exist but only the 3 nearest to spawn are relevant at first) and 3 in Bedrock.
How to collect accurate bearing readings
In Java Edition, press F3 to open the debug overlay. Throw an Eye of Ender, then look directly at the flying Eye before it disappears. The "Facing" line shows your yaw in degrees, which is the Minecraft bearing you need. For best results, stand still, throw, then rotate your view to track the Eye precisely and freeze on the angle. In Bedrock Edition, enable the coordinates overlay in settings and use an in-game compass or the F3-equivalent debug screen (if on PC) to read the angle. A common alternative is to build a ground compass from colored wool: place a straight north-south line of blocks, stand at a known point, and measure the angle from south to the Eye visually. Use a protractor or an in-game angle reference to read off the bearing. Accuracy of 1-2 degrees is realistic from F3 and will place you within a few dozen blocks of the stronghold. A 5-degree error at 1,000 blocks away translates to about 87 blocks of position error, so precision pays off.
Choosing the best two throw positions
The geometry of triangulation means the angle between your two sightlines determines how tightly the result is pinpointed. When the angle is close to 0 or 180 degrees the two rays are nearly parallel and a tiny measurement error shifts the intersection by hundreds of blocks. The sweet spot is 60 to 120 degrees between bearings, because errors in both rays produce only a small shift in the crossing point. To hit that range, move roughly at a right angle to the direction the first Eye flew before taking your second reading. Distance between throw points also helps: 300 to 500 blocks apart gives the solver a long baseline to work from. If your first bearing is roughly south-east and you move north before the second throw, the two lines will cross cleanly. If you are already close to the stronghold (under 500 blocks) a 200-block baseline is usually enough.
What to do when you reach the predicted coordinates
Strongholds are underground structures. The triangulation gives you an X/Z coordinate, but the stronghold can be anywhere from Y=29 down to around Y=10 under that point. The fastest approach is to dig straight down from the predicted surface location (carefully - avoid lava caverns). Alternatively, look for a nearby cave system and listen for the characteristic stone brick sounds. The stronghold itself is a maze of rooms including a five-way portal room containing the End Portal frame. Once you locate the portal room, fill any empty frame blocks with Eyes of Ender - it takes up to 12 Eyes - then jump in to reach The End. If you do not find the stronghold within about 100 blocks of the predicted point, throw a third Eye from a position that is 90 degrees off from your original baseline and re-run the calculation using any two of your three readings for a second estimate.

The angle between your two bearings is the single biggest factor in accuracy. These are rough guidelines - real accuracy also depends on how precisely you read the F3 bearing.
Frequently asked questions
How many Eyes of Ender do I need to find the portal?
You need at least 2 Eyes to triangulate the stronghold location with this calculator (one throw per position). You should also save 12 Eyes for filling the End Portal frame itself, although many frames spawn already filled, so 8-12 in reserve is a comfortable target. Brewing Eyes from Blaze Powder and Ender Pearls before you go hunting saves time.
Why is my bearing in negative degrees on the F3 screen?
Minecraft reports yaw from -180 to +180 degrees, where 0 is south, -90 is east, +90 is west, and 180/-180 is north. To convert to the 0-360 clockwise-from-south system this calculator uses, add 360 to any negative value: a yaw of -135 becomes 225 degrees (south-west). You can enter negative values and the trigonometry still works, but converting to 0-360 first is easier to interpret.
Does this work for Bedrock Edition?
Yes. The Overworld coordinate system in Bedrock Edition uses the same X/Z axes and the same clockwise-from-south bearing convention as Java Edition, so the triangulation math is identical. The only difference is how you read the bearing: Bedrock on mobile and console may require an in-game compass or third-party overlay rather than the F3 debug screen.
The predicted coordinates do not have a stronghold. What went wrong?
The most common cause is a small error in one of the bearing readings. A 3-degree error at 800 blocks distance shifts the prediction by about 42 blocks, which is usually still close enough to find the structure. If you are more than 100 blocks off, re-throw from a new third position that is at roughly a right angle to the original bearing, and use two of your three readings (whichever pair has the best 60-120 degree angle difference) to get a corrected estimate. Also double-check that you have not accidentally entered a yaw from looking at the ground rather than directly at the Eye.
How far from spawn are strongholds?
In Java Edition, the 3 strongholds nearest to spawn generate in a ring between 1,408 and 2,688 blocks from the origin (0,0). In Bedrock Edition the first ring of 3 strongholds is between 1,280 and 2,816 blocks from spawn. If your triangulation result is outside that range, one of your bearings is probably off. Recollect the bearing for the throw that pointed most obliquely, as shallow angles amplify errors the most.
Can I use just one throw instead of two?
Not precisely. A single bearing tells you only the direction, not the distance, so you would need to follow the Eye all the way to the ground repeatedly until it stops and starts hovering over the stronghold entrance. Two throws lets you calculate the intersection without chasing the Eye at all, saving many Eyes and a lot of time.
What is the End Portal used for?
The End Portal is the only way to reach The End dimension, a void realm where the Ender Dragon boss lives. Defeating the Ender Dragon is considered the main ending of the game and triggers the credits sequence.
