How the birthday countdown is calculated

The calculator finds the next date on which your birth month and day falls, starting from today. If today is before your birthday this year, it counts forward to that date. If your birthday has already passed this calendar year, it advances to the same date next year. The number of days is a simple count of calendar days from today (midnight) to the birthday date (midnight). Weeks are days divided by 7, and hours multiply days by 24. The percentage of the year elapsed measures how far you are through the current birthday cycle, from your most recent birthday to your next one.

Leap year birthdays (February 29)

People born on February 29 only have a matching calendar date every four years. In non-leap years this calculator uses February 28 as the nearest equivalent date. Leap years occur in years divisible by 4, except century years unless they are also divisible by 400, so 2000 and 2400 are leap years but 1900 and 2100 are not. If you are a leap-day baby, you might celebrate on February 28 in common years, though some people prefer March 1.

Milestone birthdays worth planning ahead for

Certain birthdays carry special cultural or legal weight. Turning 18 grants voting rights and legal adulthood in most countries. The 21st is particularly celebrated in the United States and United Kingdom as a traditional coming-of-age marker. The 50th birthday, sometimes called the golden birthday, is often marked with a larger celebration. Centenary birthdays (100 years) are significant enough that in the United Kingdom the monarch sends a personal congratulatory message, and in the United States a similar letter arrives from the President. The milestone calculator above shows how many days remain until your next one.

Birthday probability and fun facts

In a group of just 23 people, there is a 50% chance that two of them share the same birthday. This surprising result is known as the birthday paradox. The most common birthday in the United States is September 9, reflecting conception around New Year's Eve. The least common is February 29, shared by roughly 1 in every 1,461 people. Statistically, Tuesday is the most common day of the week on which people are born in countries that schedule planned deliveries during the working week.

Frequently asked questions

How many days until my birthday?

Enter your birth month, day, and year above and the calculator will count the exact number of calendar days from today to your next birthday. The count resets automatically once your birthday passes, so you always see the days until the next occurrence.

What if my birthday is today?

If your birthday is today the days counter will show 0 and the calculator will display a special message. After midnight the countdown resets to the next occurrence 365 or 366 days away.

How is the countdown calculated for February 29 birthdays?

If you were born on February 29 the calculator uses February 28 in years that are not leap years. This is the most common convention. Your actual leap-day birthday occurs once every four years, and this tool will correctly show 0 days on February 29 in a leap year.

How do I know what day of the week my birthday falls on?

The result labeled "Next birthday date" shows both the date and the day of the week, for example "Thursday, June 15, 2028". This lets you plan weekend celebrations or adjust for a weekday birthday.

What is a milestone birthday?

Milestone birthdays are ages that carry cultural, legal, or personal significance, such as the 18th (legal adulthood in most countries), the 21st (traditional coming-of-age in the US and UK), the 50th (often called the golden birthday), or the 100th (centenarian status). The calculator shows your next upcoming milestone and how many days away it is.

Why does the calculator show a year elapsed percentage?

The "year elapsed" percentage tells you how far through your current birthday year you are, measured from your most recent birthday to your next one. If it shows 75% elapsed, you are three-quarters of the way through your current age and have 25% of the year left before your next birthday. It is a fun way to see your progress through the year.
